When small business owners ask what they should look for in an accountant, this is my list (high standards included):

someone with experience serving businesses like yours (preferably with referrals from peers)

a clear communication policy (you should never feel left in the dark about the status of your return)

credentials for the level of support you want

availability outside of tax season, plus support on IRS/state notices

services that go deeper than tax preparation and filing (how to get strategic with your tax bill)

The last place you want to be is Googling "accountant for small business owners" next April.

If you're unhappy elsewhere and shopping for a better fit for 2027, here's what to do this September:

Ask other small business owners you trust for 2-3 accountant recommendations and start your interview list.

Set up intro calls to discuss your tax needs and expectations (ask about communication, tax planning, IRS support, etc.).

Start a handoff folder with at least 2-3 of your most recent tax returns, schedules, and other records a new accountant will need.

September is the time to make your move if you already know you want a different fit next tax season.

Partnerships: Extended Form 1065 + K-1s/K-3s, if applicable

S Corporations: Extended Form 1120-S + K-1s/K-3s, if applicable

C Corporations: Third installment of your 2026 estimated taxes

Basically, no one is escaping this month unscathed by a tax deadline!
