ππ° TAX TIP TUESDAY: HAVE A CHILD IN COLLEGE? π°π
Sending your child off to college can bring more than tuition bills, it can also affect your tax return!
Before tax season arrives, parents of college students should start keeping track of important documents and expenses, including:
π Form 1098-T from the college
π Scholarships and grants received
π Tuition and required enrollment fees
π Receipts for books, supplies, and required course materials
π Records of 529 plan withdrawals
π Your studentβs income and tax documents
π‘ IMPORTANT: Just because your college student has a job and files their own tax return does not automatically mean you can no longer claim them as a dependent.
And remember, education tax benefits have different eligibility rules. Keeping good records now can make it much easier to determine what you may qualify for when itβs time to file.
π Create a folder now labeled β2026 TAX DOCUMENTSβ and keep those college-related records together. Your future self and your tax preparer will thank you! π
