As an economics student 30 years ago, my eyes were first opened to the principles of free markets, rational self interest, and the “invisible hand” of capitalism.

Standing in front of the Adam Smith monument in Edinburgh, I also learned that the father of modern economics was proudly Scottish, born right here in Fife and then laid to rest in the heart of the capital.

30 years ago, this would’ve been a pink-sheet stock with a 1-800 number, a fax machine, and a pitch from your cousin's broker in a boiler room.

Today, it's potentially a $2T+ company.

Anthropic is preparing to go public, and the growth story is extraordinary. The numbers behind it are...a little harder to digest:
$4.6B in 2025 revenue... up roughly 12x.
$8.1B operating loss.
Nearly $42B net loss.
$518B in future cloud/compute/infrastructure commitments.

We're excited about the long-term growth potential of Anthropic and AI generally. But at these numbers, the IPO also raises some serious questions.
Of 1,494 IPOs studied from 1995–2025, the median first-year return was -4.7%, with a median maximum drawdown of -48%.

SpaceX (SPCX) provides a pretty good recent reminder. It initially surged after going public, only to later trade below its $135 IPO price.

Great company ≠ great IPO price.
Anthropic's exact listing date hasn't been announced yet. We'll be watching.

The Fed has a funny way of keeping everyone guessing.
Just one month ago, the market was pricing in a 33.1% chance of a Fed rate hike at this week's meeting.

Today? That has flipped to a 92.7% probability of a rate cut.

That's a pretty remarkable shift in just 30 days.
So what does it mean for the markets?

Albeit likely turbulent in the near-term, we think it's ultimately a positive. The bond market has already done a lot of the Fed's tightening for it, financial conditions have tightened considerably, and inflation is nowhere near the levels that would require the Fed to slam on the brakes.

A Fed cut doesn't guarantee higher stock prices, but it does remove some pressure from the economy and financial markets.

The bigger takeaway? Don't spend too much time trying to predict the Fed. Pay attention to what the market is telling you.

And right now, it's telling us something very different than it was just 30 days ago.

We did it! had a blast tackling a new challenge this morning completing a Spartan race at Angel Stadium.

Over 3 miles of running stadium stairs, 20 different obstacles including atlas carries, climbing walls, rings, sandbags up stairs, weighted burpees, a spear throw, box jumps, and rope climbs…but we’re still standing! 💪🏻🔥

Happy Labor Day weekend! 🇺🇸

A quick look at the markets heading into the holiday: Despite an intra-year decline of roughly -9%, most major equity markets have rebounded strongly and are now solidly positive for the year.

And the other thing worth noticing? The returns haven't been evenly distributed. (we've been talking about this rotation for quite some time and here it is...)

The U.S. markets will be closed Monday for Labor Day.
