In roofing, cash flow is king.

Deposits come in, then contractors, materials and employees get paid before the final payment lands.

With material and contractor bills this large, saving during busy months keeps you strong when slow season hits.

I bill my roofing clients around the 26th, payment is due on the 1st, and I start their books once the money lands.

When a client pays late, I spend that time on other accounts or on bringing new clients into my business.

If your clients only see you as someone who records transactions and asks for documents, you can be replaced.

With all the talk about AI taking over bookkeeping, that matters more every year.

Roofing contractors keep the bookkeeper who explains what their numbers mean.

I have worked with roofing companies for over 25 years and own a roofing company myself.

Most roofers don't track job costing, and many who do miss its full benefit.

Most roofers only count material and labor. Plenty of other job costs belong in every roofing job.

Roofing companies invest a lot in their teams.

Sales training.

Production systems.

Business coaching.

Marketing.

But I’ve noticed there’s one person who often gets overlooked.

The bookkeeper.

The person responsible for making sure the numbers are right.

And when something doesn’t make sense, they may not have anyone to ask.

Sometimes they’re even afraid to ask because they think they should already know the answer.

I understand that feeling because I’ve sat in that chair.

You take the numbers home with you. You think about the problem after work. You wonder what you missed.

A good bookkeeper doesn’t need to know everything.

They need the skills to do their job well—and someone experienced they can turn to when the answer isn’t obvious.

That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about supporting bookkeepers in the roofing industry.

The people carrying the numbers need support too.

Roofing Bookkeeping Mistakes!

Knowing QuickBooks isn't enough to make you a great roofing bookkeeper.

Before you can build the accounting, you need to understand what is actually happening inside the roofing company.

How do they get the job?

How do they produce it?

How does the money move?

How do they get paid and close the job?

Because if you don't understand what happened in the business, it's difficult to know whether QuickBooks is telling the right story.

That's what I break down in this week's video—the first in my new series connecting roofing operations → systems → accounting → financial results.

Watch on my Youtube Channel.

You Can't Be a Great Roofing Bookkeeper If You Don't Understand This!

New YouTube Series Starts Tomorrow

If you're a bookkeeper who wants to work with roofing companies, knowing QuickBooks is only part of the job.

Tomorrow I'm starting a new 4-part YouTube series that goes deeper into what a roofing bookkeeper really needs to understand:

Roofing Operations → Roofing Systems → Accounting → Financial Results

We're going to look at how a roofing company actually operates, the systems being used, how the accounting should support what is happening in the business, and ultimately how all of that turns into financial information the roofing owner can use.

Because the goal isn't just to know how to do bookkeeping for a roofer.

It's to understand the roofing company well enough to recognize what the accounting should be telling you—and what it should be telling the owner.

The first video comes out tomorrow.

Getting bookkeeping clients isn't just about posting more or trying the latest marketing strategy.

You also have to become the kind of bookkeeper who is prepared to serve the clients you want when the opportunity comes.

In Part 2 of my bookkeeping marketing series, I continue the conversation about getting clients, building relationships, and growing your bookkeeping business.

And if you've decided you want to specialize in working with roofing contractors and you're ready to invest in developing the skills, knowledge, and confidence to serve them at a higher level, let's talk.

Roofing Legacy is about moving beyond simply categorizing transactions and learning to understand the roofing company, its systems, its accounting workflow, and the financial information the owner needs to run a stronger business.

If you're ready to invest in growing your bookkeeping business and becoming more valuable to roofing contractors, book a Next Step Call.

A clean bookkeeping system should leave a money trail.

Here’s a simple example.

A company is paying several vendor bills with one wire transfer.
Before the wire is sent, save the list of vendor bills that make up that payment.
If the bills total $42,735.18, the wire should be $42,735.18.

Then in QuickBooks:
The bills are marked paid.
The total payment equals the wire.
The wire clears the bank.
The bank feed matches the payment.

Now you have a trail from:
Vendor bill → payment → wire → bank statement.

And if those numbers don’t agree, you know there’s something to investigate.

This is one of the differences between simply entering transactions and understanding the accounting workflow behind a business.

You’re not just trying to get the bank reconciled.

You’re creating a system where you can follow the money and prove what happened.

That’s the kind of thinking that makes a bookkeeper more valuable to a contractor.
