Mythbuster: "I don't live in the US and don't pay US taxes, so I don't need to file."

You might still need to file, even at zero tax owed.

• The US taxes based on citizenship, not residency. As of now, it's one of only two countries in the world that works this way.
• If you're a US person earning over a certain threshold, you generally have to file a US tax return, even if a tax treaty means you owe little or nothing.
• The treaty affects what you owe. It doesn't affect whether you have to file.

Still think you lose your Social Security benefits once you move to Israel? You don't.

October is Retirement Security Month in the U.S., so we pulled together the facts

American olim actually need to know about how Social Security works once you're living
abroad.

✔️ Leaving the U.S. doesn't disqualify you. You still need 40 work quarters, same as
everyone else.
✔️ Your benefit is calculated from your top 35 earning years, so gap years can matter
more than people expect.
✔️ U.S. Social Security and Israeli Bituach Leumi are entirely separate systems. One
doesn't reduce the other.
✔️ Waiting to claim can raise your benefit substantially between age 62 and 70. The right
age depends on your own numbers.
✔️ Under the U.S.-Israel tax treaty, Social Security is tax-free for Israel residents,
in both countries.

At Nardis Advisors, we help Americans in Israel line up U.S. benefits and Israeli rules so
nothing falls through the gap between the two systems.

Mythbuster: "Give up your US citizenship and you lose your 401(k) or IRA."

Not the case. Renouncing citizenship (not something we'd ever recommend, and not what this post is about) doesn't touch what you've already saved.

• Your IRA or 401(k) balance is still yours. The same rules apply for when you can, and
have to, take money out.
• The real difference shows up on the tax side. As a non-citizen, a distribution can face
withholding up to 30%, though this depends on your custodian.
• If a tax treaty applies and that income is taxed where you live, you may get a credit back
for what was withheld.

This is general information, not personalized tax advice. Every situation is different, so talk to a tax professional about yours.

Ever tried to log into the IRS, the SSA, or another U.S. government site from overseas and hit a wall at ID.me?

It's the identity verification system a lot of U.S. agencies now require, and it's not always straightforward to get through once you no longer have a U.S. phone number or address on file.

At Tuesday's webinar, Yaacov Jacob, CPA will walk through how ID.me actually works and how to get through it from abroad, alongside the rest of what it takes to reach your U.S. financial, Social Security, and tax records while living overseas.

📅 Tues, Oct 13 | 7 PM Israel / 12 PM EST
🎥 Free. Can't make it live? Register and we'll send the recording.

Mythbuster: "Move abroad and you lose your Social Security." Not true. If you've earned it, it's yours.

• You need 40 credits (about 10 years of work) to qualify. Those quarters don't have to be back to back, they just have to add up over your working life.
• Once you're eligible, that benefit is yours for good, no matter where you live.
• A handful of countries are the exception (Social Security generally stops if you're in a place like Cuba or North Korea), but otherwise it follows you.
• Payments can go straight into your Israeli bank account, in shekels.
