๐ฃ Attention Taxpayers
Filing an extension for your 2025 tax return gives you more time to file, but it does NOT extend your 2026 estimated tax payment deadlines.
For self-employed individuals, freelancers, and taxpayers with income not fully covered by withholding, the next estimated tax payment deadline is:
๐ June 15, 2026
Many taxpayers assume that once an extension is filed, they can wait until October to address taxes. However, the IRS calculates underpayment penalties separately for each missed quarterly payment beginning on the original due date.
Even if your return is filed on time in October, penalties and interest may still apply for missed or insufficient estimated payments.
โ
One common strategy to help avoid penalties is the IRS "safe harbor" method:
โข Pay 100% of your prior-year total tax liability throughout the year
โข Or 110% for higher-income taxpayers with AGI over $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately)
If your 2025 return has not yet been finalized, prior-year tax information and current income estimates can still help determine an appropriate estimated payment.
