The Form 1099-NEC threshold for payments made in 2026 has INCREASED from $600 to $2,000.
 
Basically, if your business paid a nonemployee (like a contractor, freelancer, or other non-exempt service provider) less than $2,000 for services this year, you may not be required to issue them a 1099.
 
This might mean fewer tax filings you have to do next January, but what does it mean for you right now? ↓
 
Keep collecting W-9s from your contractors and tracking how much you pay to each of them!
 
Then, hope for at least one fewer form to file in 2027! 😜

Before you let that sales guy talk you into a sweet new deal on your dream car, here’s what your accountant wants you to know ↓

Your car needs to be new to you AND actually new (used cars may be a better deal, but they don’t count for this tax break!).

That new car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup truck, or motorcycle has to have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 14,000 pounds (you can usually find this on the safety sticker on your driver’s side door jamb, or just Google it for your make + model).

Lastly, it needs to be “finally assembled” in the U.S. Use the NHTSA VIN Decoder to verify that your new car fits the requirements!

But there’s a little bit of a catch: your car isn’t the ONLY thing that has to qualify for this deduction. Your loan and income matter too!

So, talk to your accountant before assuming that interest is deductible.

The last place you want to be is Googling “accountants for small businesses” next April...

Instead, here’s what to do this September to jump-start your accountant search: 

→ Ask other small businesses you trust for 2-3 recommendations + start your interview list.

→ Set up intro calls to discuss your tax needs + expectations (don’t forget to ask about communication, tax planning, IRS support, etc.)

→ Start your handoff folder with at least 2-3 of your most recent tax returns, schedules, and any other records your new accounting team will need.
