Qualified Charitable Distributions, explained in one glance.

If you’re 70½ or older with an IRA, a QCD lets you give directly to charity and keep that money out of your taxable income entirely. It’s a win for your favorite cause and your tax bill.

Tax tip for anyone 70½ or older: give smarter from your IRA.

If you’re charitably inclined, don’t take cash out of your IRA and then write a check to charity. Instead, have your IRA send the gift directly to the charity. It’s called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), and that amount stays out of your taxable income entirely.

The timing bonus: QCDs become eligible at 70½, but required minimum distributions (RMDs) don’t start until 73. Once you ARE taking RMDs, a QCD can satisfy that requirement too, so you meet your RMD without the tax hit.

Two quick things to get it right:
The transfer must go directly from your IRA to the charity (never through your hands first)
Give yourself a cushion before year-end, since custodians can take time to process

Same generosity, smaller tax bill.

“Keeping money off your tax return entirely is often more valuable than getting a deduction for it.”

That’s the quiet power of a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). When you’re 70½ or older and give straight from your IRA to a qualified charity, that money never shows up as taxable income in the first place, so you benefit whether or not you itemize. It can even satisfy your required minimum distribution.

As giving season kicks off, it’s a strategy worth knowing. Full breakdown on the blog: https://loom.ly/dHOtpAw

Tax Brain Teaser!

Q: True or False — Giving money straight from your IRA to charity can lower your taxes more than writing a check to that same charity.

Take a guess before you scroll…

…

A: TRUE! It's called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). When you're 70½ or older and give directly from your IRA to a qualified charity, that money is excluded from your taxable income entirely, no need to itemize to benefit. Write a regular check instead, and you only get a tax break if you itemize (which most people no longer do).

Same gift, same charity, very different tax results. The "how" of giving can matter as much as the "how much."

The final tax deadline of the year is almost here!

If you filed an extension on your personal tax return back in the spring, October 15 is your last call. After that, there's no more extending, and late filing can mean penalties and interest you'd rather avoid.

Still sitting on a pile of documents (or avoiding the whole thing entirely)? No judgment, but don't wait until the 14th to deal with it. The sooner you reach out, the smoother we can get you across the finish line.

Need to get yours wrapped up? Let's talk.

Are you 70½ or older with an IRA? There's a way to give to charity AND lower your tax bill at the same time.

It's called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), and it's one of the most tax-smart ways to give. Here's the gist:

Give directly from your IRA to a qualified charity, up to $111,000 in 2026
That amount stays OUT of your taxable income entirely
It can even satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD)

The best part? Because it's excluded from your income rather than claimed as a deduction, you benefit whether or not you itemize.

'Tis the season of giving, and this is a strategy worth knowing before year-end. We break down how it works, who qualifies, and the details to watch on the blog: https://loom.ly/dHOtpAw

Celebrating 8 years of Lori!

This month marks eight years since Lori joined the AccountAbility team, and we're so grateful she did.

If you've worked with Lori, you know her superpower: taking something that feels intimidating (hi, taxes and QuickBooks) and making it approachable, clear, and dare we say... not stressful. She brings warmth, patience, and genuine care to every single client she works with.

Eight years of that kind of dedication is worth celebrating. Thank you, Lori, for everything you bring to our team and our clients!

Join us in wishing Lori a happy work anniversary in the comments!

Q: We stock our office with snacks and coffee. Can we still write that off in 2026?

A: Mostly no. Starting in 2026, meals and snacks provided for employee convenience — the break-room coffee, the stocked fridge, working lunches — are no longer deductible. The perk is still great for your team; it just doesn't come with the tax break it used to.

The good news? Plenty of other meals still count: client meals and business travel (50%), and things like team parties or meals sold to customers (100%). The key is tracking each type separately so you keep the deductions you're still entitled to.

Fun tax fact: in states like New Jersey, whether your pumpkin gets hit with sales tax depends on what you plan to DO with it.

Buy a pumpkin to bake into a pie? No sales tax, since it's treated as food. Buy that same pumpkin to carve into a jack-o'-lantern? New Jersey counts it as a "decoration," and decorations are subject to sales tax.

Same pumpkin, same shelf — the only difference is whether it's headed for your oven or your front porch.

It's a perfectly seasonal reminder that sales tax rules hide in the most unexpected places, and that the little details really do add up. (Lucky for our New Hampshire friends, no state sales tax means no pumpkin drama here!)

What's the strangest tax rule you've ever heard of? Drop it in the comments!
