Did you extend your 2025 federal tax return? For most filers, October 15 is the filing deadline.

Gather your forms, double-check payments already made, and file even if you cannot pay the full balance. If you are covered by special IRS relief, confirm your own deadline.

Filed a tax extension? October 15 gives most individual taxpayers more time to file, not more time to pay.

If you still owe tax, the balance has generally been accruing interest since the April payment deadline. Filing on time still matters, even when you cannot pay the full amount.

Does IRS tax debt disappear after 10 years?

Sometimes the IRS’s collection period ends, but the deadline is not always the date taxpayers expect.

The clock generally runs from the assessment date, not simply from when the return was due. Certain events can also pause or extend it.

Do not base your plan on an estimated expiration date.

Feeling confused about your situation?

Tax Lifeline can review the account history and help you understand the real timeline.

What happens when you're assigned an IRS officer?

If an IRS Revenue Officer is assigned to your case, the matter has moved beyond automated notices and into field collection.

The Revenue Officer may request unfiled returns, bank statements, income records, asset information, or business financials.

Most initial meetings are now scheduled by letter, but the deadlines and document requests still require careful attention.

Taxpayers have the right to professional representation.

Tax Lifeline can review the account, organize the requested information, and communicate with the IRS on your behalf.

We're here to help.

Self-employed or an independent contractor?

Many self-employed taxpayers, real estate professionals, and others whose income isn't fully covered by withholding must pay the third-quarter estimated tax payment by September 15.

If the payment is more than you can manage, ignoring it can make the problem harder to resolve.

Underpayment penalties may apply, and an existing IRS balance can continue to grow.

Tax Lifeline can review your filing history, prior payments, and current tax situation to help you understand the next step.

Before you trust someone with your IRS debt, interview them.

Ask who will actually handle your case, what credentials they hold, what they need to review before discussing outcomes, how fees are structured, and who you’ll speak with after signing.

Clear answers can help you separate a qualified tax resolution professional from a company focused on making the sale.

Social Security benefits are protected from many private creditors, but unresolved federal tax debt is different.

Through the Federal Payment Levy Program, the IRS may continuously levy 15% of certain Social Security benefits. The reduction can continue until the debt is resolved or the levy is released.

If you received a levy notice or rely on Social Security to cover essential expenses, do not wait for the first reduced payment.

Tax Lifeline can review your notices and help you understand the available resolution or hardship options.

Texas does not impose a personal state income tax, but that does not mean every taxpayer or business is free from state tax obligations.

Depending on the business, sales and use tax, franchise tax reporting, unemployment obligations, and federal payroll taxes may still apply. Each issue can involve a different agency, notice, and resolution process.

If your Texas business has received a tax notice or fallen behind, Tax Lifeline can help identify what is owed, who is collecting, and what options may be available.

IRS penalty relief is changing in 2026.

Beginning in summer 2026, the IRS is introducing an Automatic Exemption from Penalty for eligible taxpayers with a strong compliance history. It can apply to certain failure-to-file, failure-to-pay, and failure-to-deposit penalties.

If automatic relief does not apply, Reasonable Cause relief may still be available. Penalty relief does not erase the underlying tax, and not every return or penalty qualifies.

Received a penalty notice? Tax Lifeline can review your account and help you understand which options may apply.
