Did you know a life insurance policy once helped keep Stanford University open?

I recently had the opportunity to attend an insurance conference at Pacific Life’s headquarters in Newport Beach, where I learned more about the history and operations of one of the country’s oldest insurance providers.

One story really stood out.

Pacific Mutual’s very first policy was issued in 1868 on the life of Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University. When Stanford passed away in 1893, his estate was substantial, but the university was facing a shortage of available cash.

The proceeds from that life insurance policy helped provide funds during a critical time and contributed to keeping Stanford University operating.

It’s a fascinating piece of history and a powerful reminder that life insurance has been helping families, businesses, and organizations protect what they’ve built for generations.
