One of the biggest shifts in financial planning happens when you stop asking:
“Which investment should I buy?”

And start asking:
“What does my money need to accomplish?”

Some money needs to grow.
Some needs to be accessible.
Some needs to create future income.
Some needs to protect against risks you can't afford to take yourself.

And some needs to be positioned with taxes in mind.

No single account or investment is designed to do all of those things particularly well.

That's why I believe the real work of financial planning is coordination.

The individual pieces matter. But how they work together matters more.

Have a great weekend!

If you're running a business in your late 30s or 40s, select your official midlife crisis:

📌Buying a $1,200 standing desk with memory settings that you’ve sat at for 4 consecutive years

📌Announcing on Monday morning that you’re “stepping back to focus on vision,” then personally fixing a website typo by 10:15 AM

📌Opening Slack at 11:30 PM to “just drop a quick thought,” ruining your sleep AND your team’s peace of mind

📌Paying a business coach $5k a month to tell you to "delegate more," while you manually approve a $40 expense report

📌Buying a Garmin or Oura ring to track your stress, then getting stressed about your high stress score

📌Telling your spouse “things will calm down after this product launch” for the 7th year in a row

Pick your poison.😅

A few years ago, I had a client I’ll call David.

David worked incredibly hard, lived below his means, and diligently built an impressive nest egg. He was a perfect planner.

He spent thirty years deferring his dreams of major travel, telling me at every annual review, "We'll do the big Europe trip after the kids are out of college," then, "once I finally retire."

He retired at 65, healthy and excited. He and his wife spent six months planning the journey of a lifetime.

The week before they were set to leave, David received a sudden diagnosis that grounded them.

He never got to take that trip. He never got to take that trip. The money was there, the plan was solid, but time ran out.

David’s story reminds us that we are not just planning for "retirement." We are planning for a life that must be lived along the way.

As a financial planner, I focus on responsible, long-term security. But saving responsibly and enjoying your life today shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Your income should fund two non-negotiable goals: building your future safety and funding your present joy.

If you're constantly waiting for the "perfect season" or a later version of yourself to finally start making memories, you're betting on a timeline nobody can guarantee.

Build a strong foundation for tomorrow, yes, but make sure you take the trip, spend the time, and enjoy the fruits of your hard work today.

P.S. I promise the sunset in the background of this photo wasn't a green screen. Costa Rica really just looks like that! 😉

One thing I've learned after helping many people make financial decisions is that the plan you create today probably won't be the exact plan you need 10 years from now.

And that's okay.

Careers change. Families change. Businesses grow. Priorities shift. Sometimes the goals we thought would matter at 40 look very different when we're 50 or 60.

That's why I don't think a good financial plan should lock someone into one vision of the future.

It should give them enough structure to make progress today and enough flexibility to adjust when life inevitably changes.

I've seen people become so focused on creating the "perfect" financial plan that they forget something important:

We're planning for a future we can't completely predict.

The goal isn't perfection. It's putting yourself in a position where you have choices when life changes.

What's something you thought would be important to you 10 years ago that you look at completely differently today?

Net worth is probably the most overrated number in personal finance.

It’s useful. But it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Two people can have the exact same net worth and be in completely different financial positions.

One may have strong cash flow, accessible capital, multiple tax buckets and plenty of flexibility. The other may have most of their wealth tied up in assets they can’t easily access without selling, borrowing or triggering taxes.

Same net worth. Very different financial picture.

That’s why I think the better question to ask is: “How well is my wealth actually working for me?”

I’m going deeper into this idea next week.

What number do you use to measure your own financial progress?

Recent data highlighted by CNBC shows that many workers aged 55 and older are choosing to retire sooner than expected. Thanks to strong growth in stock portfolios and 401(k) balances, many feel financially ready to leave their 9-to-5s.

Retiring early while the market is high is an exciting milestone, but it also raises a few key questions:

🔹 Protecting Your Gains: If the market takes a dip early in your retirement, do you have a plan to protect your income without selling stocks at a loss?

🔹 Healthcare Before 65: Since Medicare doesn't kick in until age 65, how will you cover health insurance in the gap years?

🔹 Smart Withdrawals: Which accounts should you draw from first: Taxable, IRA, or Roth to make sure you don't pay more in taxes than you need to?

A booming market can give you a great head start, but turning stock gains into a reliable, long-term paycheck requires a solid plan.

If you’ve recently re-evaluated your retirement goals, what is your biggest priority right now?

It's hard to believe we're already heading into the final three months of the year.

At the beginning of every year, most of us have a long list of things we want to accomplish. Work goals, financial goals, health goals, places we want to visit, and things we want to do with our families.

Then life gets busy.

I've found that sometimes it's worth looking at the calendar and asking a simpler question:

What do I still want to make time for this year?

Not accomplish.

Not check off a list.

Actually make time for.

For me, some of the best parts of a year usually aren't the things that end up on a business plan or financial statement. They're the trips, conversations, family moments, and experiences that happen in between.

We still have three months left.

What's one thing you want to make time for before the year ends?

We've talked about life insurance a little more than usual this month because September is Life Insurance Awareness Month.

But if there's one thought I'd leave people with, it's this:

Life insurance isn't really about dying. It's about what continues.

The mortgage still needs to be paid. Kids still grow up and may go to college. A spouse still has a retirement to prepare for. A business may still have employees and customers depending on it. And the people you love still have plans for a future you helped build together.

That's why I think the life insurance conversation should start with people, not policies.

Who depends on you? What financial responsibilities would continue without you? And what would you want life to look like for the people you care about if you weren't there?

The answers will be different for every family, which is why there isn't a single policy, coverage amount, or strategy that's right for everyone.

may end this week.

The people and responsibilities we're protecting don't.

Your Life Changed. Did Your Coverage Change Too?

Most people don't wake up one morning thinking, “I should review my life insurance today.”

Usually, they buy coverage because something changed. They got married, bought a home, had a child, started a business, or realized someone else was depending on their income.

Then life keeps moving.

Income increases. Families grow. Mortgages change. Businesses become more valuable. Children get older. Financial responsibilities that existed ten years ago may look completely different today.

But the life insurance policy sometimes stays exactly the same.

That's why I think reviewing coverage periodically is more useful than simply asking whether you “have life insurance.”

The real question is whether the coverage you have today still matches the people and financial responsibilities you're trying to protect.

Since September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, this is a good excuse to spend 10 minutes reviewing your existing policies and beneficiaries.

You may find everything is exactly where it should be.

Or you may realize your life has changed more than your coverage has.

When was the last time you actually looked at your life insurance policy?
