Not all retirement deadlines fall in April. If you contribute to a 401(k) or 403(b) at work, those contributions come straight out of your paycheck — which means December 31 is the cutoff for 2026. If a year-end increase is part of your plan, it has to happen in your remaining paychecks.

IRAs run on a different clock: you generally have until next spring's tax filing deadline to make your 2026 IRA contribution. Business owners have separate rules again — solo 401(k) and SEP plans have their own setup and funding deadlines, and some depend on whether you file an extension.
