Spring break this week marked our second annual ski trip since I started my CPA firm.
Starting my firm wasn’t just a professional decision—it was a life decision. I wanted to build something that allowed me to prioritize my faith, my family, and the people I serve.
Time on the slopes with my kids reminded me why that matters.
I try to teach them a few simple things:
Stay humble.
Treat people well.
Respect other people’s time.
When you respect someone’s time, you’re telling them their life and priorities matter.
That same mindset shapes how I serve my clients. Every business owner I work with is balancing responsibilities, families, employees, and decisions that carry real weight. They deserve advisors who value their time, communicate clearly, and show up when it matters.
These moments away with family help keep me grounded in that perspective.
Over the past several years—working as an auditor, starting my own firm, and learning through plenty of mistakes and lessons along the way—I’ve realized there are a lot of stories worth sharing.
So in a couple weeks, I’ll be launching a new series:
“Material Weaknesses: The Chronicles of an Auditor, Husband, and Father.”
Every couple of weeks I’ll share lessons from my career and life—stories about leadership, mistakes, ethics, family, and the experiences that shape who we become professionally and personally.
Grateful for time with my family this week, and looking forward to sharing the journey.

Thank you to David White at Weaver for the invite to today’s golf tournament. It was great catching up with my old colleagues.
I appreciate the experience I gained working for 10+ years at Weaver. It’s given me a lot of the knowledge how I use now working for my own firm.
Good times.

With it being football Sunday, seems only appropriate we’d end our series with this final lesson from football.
Football Lessons for Business Success – Day 5
Legacy & Impact
Dynasties are remembered for more than wins.
As a lifelong 49ers fan, I think about legacy often. The Bill Walsh era wasn’t just about Super Bowl victories — it was about building a culture of excellence, discipline, and innovation that shaped the entire game.
Football reminds us that success isn’t just measured in trophies, but in the impact you leave behind. Business is the same way. Revenue and growth matter, but what truly lasts is the culture you build, the values you uphold, and the lives you impact along the way.
That’s why I started my firm. I want it to be more than a business — I want it to reflect integrity, service, and faithfulness. My faith teaches me that we’re called to build on a foundation that lasts.
““Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.”
Matthew 7:24-25 NLT
That’s the kind of legacy worth pursuing. One grounded in faith and service to others.
VP Audit & Accounting Services we’re here to serve. Let us serve you.

Football Lessons for Business Success – Day 4 🏈
Leadership & Trust
Great leaders don’t just talk — they lead by example.
As football player, I knew the kind of players I could trust when the game was on the line. They weren’t always the loudest voices, but they showed up with consistency, discipline, and accountability. When you can count on the person next to you, the whole team plays with more confidence.
Business is no different. Leadership is about more than titles or speeches — it’s about action, character, and building trust. Whether it’s guiding a team, serving clients, or making tough decisions, people follow those they believe in.
For me, trust is rooted in integrity — a principle grounded in my faith. I believe leadership means being faithful in the small things so that others know they can rely on you in the big moments.
In our industry, you often hear the term “industry leader” thrown around a lot. But what are they the leader of? As a business owner, when you’re selecting a firm to support either your accounting, tax or assurance needs, you should be asking that question yourself. Does this firm have experience in my specific industry? Will they be able to help me navigate the nuances of my industry and advise me in times of need?
At VP Audit & Accounting Services, we try to focus our attention on specific industries we’ve had experience with over the last 20+ years. Some of those industries include:
🔹non-profits
🔹manufacturing
🔹retail
🔹franchisor/franchisee businesses
🔹transportation
By limiting our clientele industries, we’re able to advise them as subject matter experts because we focus our business and internal development on knowing the accounting and financial reporting for those specific industries. We hope business owners will see us as LEADERS in our field as well.
If you’re curious about our services, give us a shout. Happy to discuss how we might be of assistance.

Football Lessons for Business Success – Day 3
Resilience & Adversity
Every season has setbacks. The great teams bounce back.
As a collegiate player , I experienced both victories and defeats. Injuries, tough losses, bad breaks — they’re part of the game. What defines a team isn’t the setback itself, but how it responds.
Business works the same way. Financial hits, compliance challenges, and unexpected obstacles are inevitable. Resilience — the ability to adjust, recover, and keep moving forward — is what separates those who thrive from those who fold.
My faith reminds me that adversity is not the end. James 1:2–3 teaches us that trials produce perseverance, and perseverance leads to maturity. That truth has carried me through both football and business challenges.
An example of this in my industry is when a client receives feedback regarding internal control deficiencies and material weaknesses. Some clients are prone to take offense to this kind of feedback, so I like to have a discussion with management about how these are value added stepping stones that highlight ways for the organization to sure up their processes. By responding appropriately to these matters, you can assure yourself that the organization is reducing their exposure to potential errors or fraud risk. In addition, many times these best practices implemented correctly will benefit their business functioning more efficiently and transparently.
I believe it’s all in the delivery. If management is more receptive to feedback, then their business will become more resilient in the long run.
VP Audit & Accounting Services we take the time and care to carefully explain these matters. Doing so builds rapport with our clients and allows us opportunity to add value in an otherwise administrative process.

🙏 I want to take a moment to pray for Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones. While I didn’t always agree with his political stances, I truly respected how boldly he lived out his faith in Jesus Christ. He inspired many young people to be unashamed of what they believe, and that is something I will always appreciate.
My family and I are praying for his loved ones and for all those impacted by yesterday’s events. May God bring comfort and strength in this time of loss.

Football Lessons for Business Success – Day 2
Teamwork & Roles
Every position matters.
Offensive lineman rarely get headlines, but without them, the quarterback never has a chance. Without the punter, field position could play a significant role in the starting point for your opponents. Without a good place holder, no game winning field goals could ever be made. Every role is critical, even if it doesn’t always get the spotlight.
Business is the same way. Success happens when everyone understands their role and commits to the bigger picture. Leaders, accountants, assistants, sales teams — each part contributes to the whole. And everyone has their own skill sets, but many times small business owners will wear multiple hats. That may work for the short run, but identifying your strengths early and handing off some of the responsibilities your less skilled in will go a long ways to establishing a successful business. You wouldn’t ask a QB to throw to himself for a deep touchdown pass, would you? Why would you attempt to take on your own accounting, taxes or financial reporting having little to no experience in this area?
At my firm, I remind myself and my team that when we all execute faithfully in our roles, our clients win. No role is too small, and none of us succeed alone.
My faith reminds me that we’re called to serve others with our gifts (1 Peter 4:10). When each of us uses what we’ve been given, the whole team thrives — whether it’s on the field or in business.
When considering some of those necessary skills needed for your organization, a good short-term solution or even long-term solution is identifying a firm you can utilize to outsource your back office accounting needs. Whether that’s simply bookkeeping or a more robust accounting function that including reconciliations, financial reporting, and/or fractional CFO functions, VP Audit & Accounting Services has you covered.

And here we go! Let’s kick off this series on the right foot!
Football Lessons for Business Success – Day 1
Discipline & Preparation
Games are won in practice, not just on game day.
When I played football at Texas Lutheran, I learned quickly that the hours in the weight room, the film sessions, and the countless reps determined the outcome long before kickoff. Discipline and preparation weren’t optional — they were the standard.
Business works the same way. Success doesn’t come from last-minute scrambles or “Hail Mary” decisions. It comes from preparation, planning, and doing the small things consistently well.
As a CPA, I see this play out all the time. Clients who prepare — with solid financial systems, internal controls and compliance processes, and forward planning — thrive. Those who wait until the last minute often find themselves under pressure, scrambling to hold it together.
For me, discipline and preparation aren’t just business principles — they’re life values grounded in my faith. Scripture reminds us that diligence and stewardship matter (Proverbs 21:5), and that same truth applies on the field and in business.
More often than not, business owners are reactionary and not proactive in their decision making. This results in more clean up in the end and some times costly mistakes you’ll feel in the pocket. Being proactive means you recognize you don’t have all the answers, but you surround yourself with individuals and organizations with sound advice that can help you determine the right balance between cost and benefits. If it’s an annual scramble to get things in place at the end of the year, whether that’s for tax preparation or audit/review requirements, you’ll find it’s a constant uphill battle. But those who respect the process and can make simple changes… like acquiring outside accounting services that support your reporting function, while you take care of operations… will see a world of difference in how easy and efficient it is to 1) save money and 2) complete those annual administrative tasks.
Here at VP Audit & Accounting Services, we offer both accounting services that support your internal financial reporting functions as well as an option to support your assurance functions required by outside financial institutions, lenders and investors. We’ve got the right blend of expertise and firm size to address your needs and provide personal boutique services to clients who desire that one on one experience.

Kickoff Post – Football Lessons for Business Success
With the start of football season… NFL, college, high school and so on… I thought it’d be a great starting point for another series. I mean football has shaped a lot of who I am today.
I was blessed to play college football at Texas Lutheran University. The game taught me discipline, teamwork, resilience, and the value of leadership — lessons I carry with me every day as a business owner and CPA.
I’m also the first in my family to go to college and graduate. Nothing was handed to me growing up. I learned early on that hard work and preparation are the foundation for success.
But beyond football and business, my faith in Jesus Christ has been the cornerstone of my life. The values I learned through Him — integrity, perseverance, and service to others — are what truly guide me in how I live and how I lead my firm.
And since birth, I’ve been a die-hard San Francisco 49ers fan — so when football season kicks off, it always brings me back to the values this game instilled in me.
That’s why I’m starting a 5-day series: “Football Lessons for Business Success.”
Each day this week including Saturday, I’ll share one principle from the game of football and how it applies to business, leadership, and life.
My hope is that these lessons will not only inspire but also give you practical perspective you can apply in your own work and business.
Day 1 starts tomorrow. I can’t wait to share this with you.
