What “don’t plan for retirement” really means

Different surveys measure “planning” differently — some look at savings behavior, others at whether people have a strategy. The most reliable indicators come from savings data:

46% of Americans have zero retirement savings (Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances).
This is the clearest sign of no retirement planning.

20%–46% of adults report having no retirement savings, depending on the survey.
AARP, Gallup, FINRA, and Federal Reserve data all fall within this range.

43% of non-retired Americans don’t have a retirement account at all, meaning no 401(k), IRA, or pension.

Together, these numbers show that roughly 1 in 2 Americans have not meaningfully planned for retirement.
