Sales tax amnesty making a comeback 👀

Rhode Island just announced its first tax amnesty program in nearly a decade: a 75-day window starting December 3, 2026, with penalties waived and interest cut by 25%. But don't sleep on Indiana: that amnesty window closes September 9, so if you've got exposure there, the clock is ticking. We break down both (plus Illinois, Washington, New York, and more) in our updated guide.

Selling into New Jersey? Here's the deal: one flat 6.625% rate, no county or city add-ons, and a genuinely long list of exemptions—but that doesn't mean it's simple.

Between Urban Enterprise Zones charging half-price tax, economic nexus thresholds, and rules that tax a downloaded movie differently than a streamed one, there's a lot of nuance hiding under that flat rate.

We just refreshed our full New Jersey Sales Tax Guide with everything you need: what's taxable (and what's not), how nexus works, marketplace facilitator rules, and how to register, collect, and file.

Running a business in New Jersey? Good news: sales tax filing there is simpler than most states. Bad news: "simpler" doesn't mean "impossible to mess up."

Between the quarterly return that's always due, the monthly payments that sneak up on growing businesses, and the fact that there are A LOT of potential penalties—there's a lot to keep straight.

We've pulled together a complete guide with deadlines, how to file step-by-step through the NJ Tax Portal, why zero returns still matter, and what late filing actually costs you.

📋 Doing business in New Jersey? Then you probably need to register for sales tax.

Whether you're opening a storefront in Newark or just crossed $100K in sales shipping to Jersey customers, the state expects you to collect and remit sales tax on all taxable sales. The good news? Registration is free, mostly online, and once you're in there's no need to worry about annual renewals.

We broke down the entire process: nexus rules, what DORES needs from you, and the exact registration steps for both in-state businesses and remote sellers (and trust us, the steps are very different from one to the other).

📢 North Carolina remote sellers: your registration timeline has changed!

Effective July 2, 2026, certain remote sellers that exceed North Carolina’s $100,000 sales threshold may have at least 60 days to register and begin collecting and remitting sales tax.

The extra time applies only when exceeding the sales threshold is the sole reason the seller is considered engaged in business in North Carolina. Other nexus-creating activities (like having a storefront or employees in-state) may mean the 60-day period does not apply.

New Missouri legislation (HB 2819) allows businesses to round the final total of cash transactions beginning August 28, 2026.

Here’s what retailers need to know:
- Rounding is optional
- It applies only to cash transactions
- Rounding happens only to the final total after all items, discounts, and sales tax are calculated
- Credit, debit, checks, mobile payments, and other non-cash transactions must be charged the exact calculated amount
- Sales tax must still be calculated, reported, and remitted exactly as required

For example:
• $1.92 cash total → $1.90
• $1.93 cash total → $1.95
Missouri retailers may want to update POS procedures and train staff before the new rules take effect!

Can your sales tax rate change when you cross a street? Possibly.

When city, county, transit, and special district taxes all stack on top of each other, it can completely change the sales tax game from one block to the next. Each funds something different (roads, schools, tourism, you name it).

We broke down the common types of local sales tax and what it actually pays for. If you're managing multi-state or multi-jurisdiction sales tax compliance, this is worth a read. 👇

📢 Idaho taxpayers, take note!

The Idaho State Tax Commission has made it easier to amend your Form 850, Idaho Sales and Use Tax Return. As of July 30, 2026, taxpayers with Idaho seller's permits can now file amended Form 850 returns directly through their Taxpayer Access Point (TAP) account.

That means no more mailing paper amended returns, being able to track your amended filings online, and faster, more efficient processing.

If you don't already have a TAP account, you can create one for free through the Idaho State Tax Commission: https://idahotap.gentax.com/TAP/_/
