USPS Updates: Tips to Avoid Late Tax Filings

The United States Postal Service updated its transportation operations on December 24, 2025. Because of these changes, some mail may take longer to reach processing facilities.

Postmark rules haven’t changed, but the postmark date might not match the day you drop off your mail which matters for time‑sensitive items like tax returns and payments.

To help avoid late filings:
- 📬 Mail returns and payments a few days early to allow for possible delays.

- 📨 Request a manual postmark, use certified mail, or get a certificate of mailing for proof.

- 💻 File electronically or make online payments by the due date.

No tax on overtime

For tax years 2025 through 2028, workers who receive qualified overtime compensation may deduct the pay that exceeds their regular rate of pay (generally, the “half” portion of “time-and-a-half”) reported on a Form W-2, Form 1099, or other specified statement furnished to the individual.

The maximum annual deduction is $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers).

The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers) and is available for both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers.

The Social Security Administration has issued a press release on the passage of the new tax bill, but unfortunately, it contains incorrect tax-related information.

The press release contains the following statement:

“The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples.”

This is incorrect. The legislation doesn’t contain any provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits. Instead, it includes an additional deduction of up to $6,000 for seniors.
