Office Halloween story # 30
The Door They Wouldn’t Knock
They already had the skill.
Could run the work.
Could find the customers.
Could see the shop in their head as clear as a porch light.
What they didn’t have was the nerve to pick up the phone.
Not because the accountants were cruel.
Because starting meant numbers they couldn’t see yet.
A name on a form.
A tax they didn’t understand.
A rule they might already be breaking just by charging the first customer.
So they waited.
Did the jobs in cash.
Wrote nothing down.
Told themselves it wasn’t a business until it felt official.
Fear loves that story. It grows in the gap between I can do the work and I don’t know what happens if I file.
By Halloween the gap had teeth.
Money in a drawer with no books.
A “side thing” that had quietly become a living.
No election. No estimated payments. No idea whether they were a sole prop, an S corp, or just a target.
They drove past Seal Tax Service three times.
Lights on.
Door unlocked.
Never parked.
The scare wasn’t the IRS.
The scare was walking in and finding out what they already were.
When they finally sat down, the monster was smaller than the story they’d told themselves.
We named the business.
Chose the entity.
Set the books.
Mapped the tax before it mapped them.
Skill opens the shop.
Fear keeps the lights off.
The meddling accountants don’t laugh at the ones who waited. We turn on the light and start the paperwork.
If you can do the work and the only thing stopping you is not knowing what comes next — that’s the haunting.
Come in before the unknown writes the ending for you.
