Starting a business comes with a whole new vocabulary. 📚
LLC. EIN. DBA.
You’ll hear these terms constantly—but they describe different parts of setting up and operating a business.
Understanding the difference now can make the rest of the startup process much easier.
Welcome to MJL Business Start-Up School. 🎓
An LLC (Limited Liability Company) is a business entity created under state law.
Think of this as the legal structure of the business—not its federal tax ID and not necessarily the public-facing name you use.
An LLC can also have one owner or multiple owners, and its federal tax treatment is a separate topic we’ll cover in another lesson.
📌 LLC = think legal entity.
An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a federal taxpayer identification number issued by the IRS.
Here’s an important distinction:
Getting an EIN doesn’t create an LLC.
And despite the word Employer, a business doesn’t necessarily need employees to have an EIN.
📌 EIN = think federal tax ID.
A DBA generally means Doing Business As.
It may allow a business to operate under a name that’s different from its legal entity name, subject to applicable state and local rules.
For example:
Legal entity: Johnson Ventures LLC
Business operates as: River Valley Cleaning
📌 DBA = think business/trade name.
Here’s why seeing all three together makes this easier:
Maria Lopez LLC → the legal entity.
EIN → the federal taxpayer identification number associated with the business.
Bloom Cleaning Co. → the name the business may use publicly if properly registered where required.
One business can encounter all three—but each serves a different purpose.
🚨 This is where new business owners often get confused.
“I got my EIN, so my LLC is done.”
Not necessarily.
An EIN doesn’t create your state business entity, and forming an LLC doesn’t automatically complete every license, permit, tax registration or other requirement your business may need.
Business startup is a process, not one piece of paperwork.
Your quick cheat sheet:
🏢 LLC → Legal entity
🔢 EIN → Federal tax ID
🏷️ DBA → Name used to conduct business when different from the legal name, where applicable
Three terms. Three
