I've been working with someone who has $140k in student loan debt. Needless to say, she was stressed about repaying. In helping her, I realized she worked for a non-profit organization so we worked together to get her employer to certify her employment for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. She was pleasantly surprised to learn she had 26 qualifying payments and will continue to work toward qualifying for loan forgiveness. It is currently estimated she will have about $120k forgiven.

We then looked into a more affordable repayment program as her budget is limited. We were able to get her into a $100 month repayment program! She was thrilled to find out that student loan repayment CAN BE affordable.

Student loans are daunting and I encourage all students to borrow responsibly.

Although the FAFSA application is much simpler to complete, financial aid remains a complex topic for students and parents.

With the recent release of the 2027-28 FAFSA, Mapping Your Future recorded a financial aid presentation to help students and parents understand financial aid and complete the FAFSA.

In the 2027-28 FAFSA presentation, Cathy Mueller, Executive Director of Mapping Your Future, presents a high-level overview of paying for college, the 2027-2028 FAFSA, and available resources. The approximately 40-minute video also provides information about some of the recent changes to financial aid and includes some scholarship search and application tips and resources.

A homeschooling family may receive education funding through the Personalized Education Program (PEP) Scholarship.

Important distinction: PEP is separate from a traditional district-registered home education program. If your child is approved for PEP, you generally must:

*End the child’s home-education registration with the school district.
*Register the child as a PEP student through an approved Scholarship Funding Organization.
*Submit an annual student learning plan.
*Have the child complete an approved annual assessment.
Use the scholarship only for approved educational expenses.

The money is placed in an education savings account. You may purchase approved items through the program or pay out of pocket and request reimbursement from your child’s available scholarship balance. Eligible expenses can include curriculum, instructional materials, tutoring, approved online programs, testing, certain classes, and other authorized educational services. It is not unrestricted cash, and reimbursement requires receipts or paid invoices.

For the 2026–27 school year, Step Up currently says eligible purchases generally must fall between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027, with reimbursement requests due by July 31, 2027. Review the purchasing guide before buying because individual items and documentation requirements can change.

If your child has a qualifying disability, the Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities may provide another possible route, but you generally cannot use overlapping scholarships for the same student and period.
