You pay every month. You have a card. You have an app. You don't have insurance.
The Maryland Insurance Administration has warned about entities selling unauthorized health plans in Maryland.
How it works: someone poses as a licensed agent. The plan promises to cover everything and the premium is low. In the policy documents, the fine print makes you a limited partner or part owner of the company that sold it to you. Many people believed they were on Maryland Health Connection and were on a different site.
If the group isn't authorized, it may not pay your claims, and the state may have limited authority to make it.
Red flags:
· You're offered a role as "partner," "member-owner," or "part owner."
· They say the plan is "self-funded" or ERISA, so the state can't regulate it.
· Unusually low premium with a promise to cover everything.
· The website looks like Maryland Health Connection but doesn't end in .gov.
· They charge a fee to enroll you. Official help is free.
· They called you out of the blue.
How to verify, free:
1. Ask for photo ID and State of Maryland certification. That's your right.
2. Look up their license at apps.insurance.maryland.gov (Producer Search).
3. Confirm with the Maryland Insurance Administration: 1-800-492-6116
Maryland's only official site is marylandhealthconnection.gov · 1-855-642-8572
