**What should a professional tax preparer actually DO for you?** 💼

Since it's Tax Professional Awareness Week, let's set the standard. A true professional:

✅ Holds a current PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) — required by law for anyone paid to prepare returns.
✅ Reviews your documents and asks questions — real due diligence, not just data entry.
✅ Walks you through your return before you sign — line by line, in plain English.
✅ Signs your return as the preparer. (If they won't sign it, walk away.)
✅ Is transparent about fees. Payment is discussed at the meeting, before filing — including the option to have it come straight from your refund.
✅ Keeps learning — tax law changes every year, and so should your preparer's knowledge.

That's the bar. Anything less isn't professional service — it's a gamble.

**It's Tax Professional Awareness Week — and it's a great week to be a taxpayer.** 🎉

Every October, the IRS shines a spotlight on professional tax preparers — the people trained, credentialed, and accountable for getting your return right. All week long, the IRS is rolling out free training, guidance, and tools for tax pros gearing up for the 2027 filing season.

Translation for you? Your tax preparer should be sharpening their skills RIGHT NOW — before the rush. A professional who invests in staying current is a professional who protects your money.

I'll be sharing all week: what to expect from a true professional, how to check credentials, and the red flags that should send you running.

**Missed your RMD? The penalty is 25% of what you should've withdrawn.** 😬

If you're 73 or older, the IRS requires you to take a Required Minimum Distribution from your retirement accounts every year by December 31 — whether you need the money or not.

Skip it, and the penalty is 25% of the amount you should've taken out. (It used to be 50%, so yes — this is the "reduced" version.)

The good news: there's still time before year-end to get it right. I'll review your accounts, calculate the correct amount, and make sure you never pay that penalty.

Single-member LLC and skipping quarterly tax payments? The IRS keeps score.** 📊

Here's what trips up most new business owners: as a single-member LLC, the IRS treats you like a sole proprietorship — which means no employer is withholding your taxes. That 15.3% self-employment tax? That's on you, four times a year.

Miss the quarterly payments and the penalties stack up quietly in the background.

There's a right number for your estimates — I calculate it for you, so you pay what you owe and not a dollar more in penalties.

Your business deserves IRS-compliant books. Let's talk.

Single mom or dad filing as "Single"? You could be leaving thousands on the table.** 💰

If you're unmarried, pay more than half the household costs, and have a qualifying child living with you — you may qualify for **Head of Household** status.

That means a bigger standard deduction and wider tax brackets than filing Single. For many single parents, it's a difference of thousands back in your pocket.

And if there's a custody agreement? Who claims the kids isn't always who you'd think — let's get it right *before* you file, not after the IRS starts asking questions.

You work hard for your family. Keep what's yours.

**Is your Social Security taxable?**

A lot of retirees are surprised to learn the answer can be YES.

Here's the quick version: if your combined income is over $25,000 (single) or $32,000 (married filing jointly), up to 85% of your Social Security benefits can be taxed.

Nobody sends you a warning letter about this — you just find out at tax time.

Don't guess with your retirement money. I'll review your situation and make sure you're not overpaying — or underpaying and risking a surprise bill.

The IRS Wants to Verify Your Identity 🪪

Before your imagination turns this into an episode of Law & Order: Taxpayer Unit, understand that the IRS sometimes requests identity verification as part of protecting taxpayers and the tax system from identity theft and fraudulent filings.

But here’s the important part:

Verify that the communication and instructions are legitimate. Do not give sensitive information to random callers, emails, texts, or websites simply because someone says they’re with the IRS. Read the official notice carefully and use appropriate official channels.

If you’re unsure what you’ve received, TCJ can help you understand the notice before you start handing out information.

Your tax information deserves protection.

Security matters just as much as the tax return.

The Envelope Is Not the Emergency 🚨

You went to the mailbox.

You saw that envelope.

Internal Revenue Service.

And suddenly your whole nervous system started filing an amended return.

First things first: OPEN THE LETTER.

An IRS notice does not automatically mean you're being audited. It doesn't automatically mean you owe thousands of dollars. And it definitely doesn't mean you should spend the next three weeks staring at the envelope, hoping it resolves itself.

It means the IRS is communicating something to you.

The first step is understanding WHAT.

At TCJ Tax Services & Business Solutions , we don't start with panic. We start with the notice, the tax year, what the IRS says happened, and what—if anything—needs to happen next.

📬 Got a letter sitting unopened on the counter?

Bring the letter. We'll bring the clarity.

YOUR TAX RETURN SHOULD NOT BE THE FIRST TIME YOU DISCOVER A PAYROLL PROBLEM.

Let me close out National Payroll Week with this one.

Employees:
If too little federal income tax is being withheld, you could be staring down a balance due you didn't see coming.
If too much is being withheld, you're letting the government hold onto your money all year — money you could've used now instead of waiting on a refund.

Business owners — here's where it really gets real:
If payroll deposits, filings, records, or internal controls aren't being monitored, April is WAY too late to start asking questions.

And let's be honest about why this happens. You're not ignoring payroll because you don't care — you're buried. You're running the business, chasing clients, handling HR, putting out fires... and payroll quietly becomes "something we'll double-check later." Deadlines slip. Deposits get made late. Nobody's actually reconciling the filings against what was paid. Then tax season hits, and suddenly you're finding out about problems that started in March.

This is why I keep teaching:
Taxes do not begin with the tax return.
The return simply tells the story of every decision, transaction, withholding, and payment that happened all year long.

Here's how we help take that off your plate:
✅ Payroll compliance reviews — catching under/over withholding before it becomes a surprise
✅ Ongoing deposit & filing monitoring — so nothing slips through the cracks
✅ Recordkeeping support — clean books, audit-ready, all year
✅ Internal controls setup — so payroll isn't running on hope and memory
✅ Quarterly check-ins — real accountability instead of a once-a-year scramble

National Payroll Week may end today. Your payroll awareness shouldn't.

Let's make the shift from reacting at tax time to paying attention all year long.

That's what being tax-educated looks like.
