For many people, pets are not just animals. They are beloved members of the family. Yet when it comes to estate planning, our four-legged companions are often left out of estate plans.
Here is what happens without a plan in place: If you pass away or become incapacitated without specific provisions for your pet, they may be distributed as personal property under state law, potentially without any financial support for their care.
So, our team wants to share a few key protections for pets that estate plans can include.
🐾 A designated caretaker who will have physical custody of your pet can be named directly in your estate planning documents, along with specific care instructions.
🐾 A backup caretaker can also be named in your estate planning documents in case your first choice is unable or unwilling to take on the responsibility.
🐾 A pet trust, which is a legal arrangement that sets aside funds specifically for your pet's care, names a trustee to manage those funds, and creates accountability for how the money is spent. Pet trusts are now recognized in all 50 states and can be incorporated into a new or existing estate plan.
🐾 Detailed care instructions covering your pet's unique needs, daily routines, veterinary preferences, and any other considerations that will help the caretaker provide continuity of care.
With countless households owning at least one pet, ensuring their future can be a meaningful and increasingly common part of comprehensive estate planning. If you have questions about how to include your pet in your estate plan or would like to explore your options, please reach out today. We are here to help.

Some of the most valuable year-end tax opportunities are the ones business owners do not revisit often enough.
This can include evaluating whether your current entity structure still makes sense. As a business grows, the structure that worked from the start may no longer be the most tax-efficient.
A sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or S corporation can each produce different tax results depending on profitability, payroll, and owner compensation. This type of review can impact self-employment taxes, how income is reported, and overall planning flexibility.
Contact our office if you want to review whether your current entity structure is working in your favor. We can run the numbers and help you determine what makes the most sense for your business.

A common estate planning assumption is that spouses will automatically inherit everything when we die. However, the reality is more complicated. Marriage provides important legal rights, but it does not guarantee that every asset will automatically pass to a surviving spouse. Swipe to learn more.
Do not leave something this important to assumptions. Contact us to discuss your estate plan and make sure it reflects your wishes and your family's needs.

August is National Eye Exam Month, a perfect reminder to schedule your annual eye exam if you haven’t already.
A comprehensive annual eye exam is covered by most vision plans, meaning you can obtain this key preventive care as easily as scheduling your appointment.
Additionally, these exams can do more for your health than just update your prescription. Your eyes can reveal early warning signs of serious health conditions that you might not know about otherwise, including:
👁️ Hypertension - Irregularities in the eye's blood vessels can signal high blood pressure before other symptoms appear.
👁️ High cholesterol - A yellowish tint or patch around the cornea or eyelid may indicate elevated cholesterol levels.
👁️ Autoimmune disorders - Inflammation in the eye can be an early sign of conditions like lupus.
👁️ Thyroid disease - Bulging or protruding eyes are often associated with thyroid-related conditions.
👁️ Cancer - Unusual structures within the eye can indicate ocular melanoma, and changes around the eyelids may reveal certain skin cancers.
If it has been more than a year since your last eye exam, let this month be your reminder to get it on the calendar.
