Her card got declined. She called the bank to find out why. The bank told her the state had already been there.
The California Franchise Tax Board does not call first. It writes. It waits. Then it lets itself in, and the first thing you know about it is a card that will not run and an account that reads zero.
Lisa is not real. The levy is. I have taken this call more times than I can count, usually from someone standing in a parking lot trying to keep their voice level.
Here is the part the notice does not put in bold. When CaliClaw attaches to your account, the bank holds that money for 10 calendar days. Calendar days. Not business days. Saturday counts. Sunday counts. The holiday counts. If it hits on a Thursday before a long weekend, you have already lost four of them before anyone picks up a phone.
Some of what is sitting in there may be exempt. Exempt does not mean protected. You have to claim it, in writing, inside the window. Miss the date and being right stops mattering.
I sat on the wrong side of a tax balance for eight years. I know what a frozen account does to a household by Wednesday. So I am not going to tell you it will work out. I am going to tell you the clock is running and there is a move.

Account already frozen? Do not read a book. Call 909-570-1103 or go to CallTaxEA.com and tell me what you are dealing with. I will take it from there.
Subscribe so the next notice does not catch you flat.
Delay is the danger. CaliClaw does not send a follow-up notice.
