💰 Does your business make money… but somehow there’s never anything left to pay yourself?

Let’s talk about Profit First! 🙌

Created by Mike Michalowicz, this cash-management approach makes setting money aside for profit a regular habit.

Income goes into a holding account, then gets divided into separate accounts for:

💚 Profit: A reward for owning the business.
👩‍💼 Owner’s pay: Compensation for the work you do.
🏦 Taxes: Money reserved for tax obligations.
💡 Operating expenses: Money available to run the business.

Giving your dollars a purpose can help you see what’s available to spend—and avoid treating your entire bank balance like shopping money. 😉

The percentages should fit your business, expenses, and cash needs. Moving money between accounts doesn’t create profit, so accurate bookkeeping and regular financial reviews still matter!

At Let’s Make Cents Bookkeeping, we help you understand your numbers and plan where your money goes. You work hard—let’s make sure your business supports you, too! 💚

💵 How often should you pay your employees?

You have flexibility to choose a schedule that works for your business—as long as it meets applicable state payday requirements.

Personally, I’ve seen tremendous success with businesses switching to weekly payroll! 🙌

Why can it work so well?

✅ Business budgeting: Smaller, more frequent payroll payments can make it easier to plan your weekly cash needs.

✅ Employee budgeting: A predictable weekly paycheck can help employees manage groceries, bills, and everyday expenses.

✅ Employee retention: Weekly pay can be a perk your team values and another reason they enjoy working for you!

The total wages don’t shrink—you’re changing when you pay them. And more payroll runs can mean additional processing costs, so consider those before switching.

At Let’s Make Cents Bookkeeping, we help you find a payroll rhythm that makes cents for your business and your team! 💚

💡 Did you know there’s more to accounting than just taxes?

Sure, taxes play a big role—but your numbers can help you make better business decisions all year long!

📊 Do you know your gross profit margin?
💸 How much does your overhead cost each month?
📣 Is your advertising bringing in enough sales to justify the expense?
🤔 Which products or services are actually making you money?

That’s where managerial accounting comes in! It helps turn your financial information into answers you can use to price smarter, manage expenses, and plan ahead.

By the time tax season rolls around, you should already understand where your business stands—without waiting for your tax return to tell the story. 😉

At Let’s Make Cents Bookkeeping, we help you understand your numbers so you can run your business with confidence. 💚

💳 South Dakota business owners: Do you charge customers a fee for paying by credit card?

Here’s a detail that’s easy to miss: If the product or service you’re selling is subject to South Dakota sales tax, the credit card fee you charge the customer is taxable, too!

That fee is part of your taxable gross receipts—even if you list it separately on the invoice.

📊 Example:
$100 taxable sale + $3 credit card fee = $103 subject to sales tax.

Take a moment to check your invoicing or checkout settings. Adding the fee doesn’t always mean your software is calculating sales tax on it correctly!

Small details can make a big difference in your books. 💛

“My business is profitable—so why is there no money in the bank?” 🤔

Because profit and cash flow are not the same thing.

📊 Profit measures how your business performed over a period of time.

💵 Cash flow shows when money actually enters and leaves your bank account.

Your business can report a profit while cash is tied up in:

• Unpaid customer invoices
• Inventory
• Equipment purchases
• Loan principal payments
• Owner withdrawals

Meanwhile, payroll, vendors, taxes, and other bills still need to be paid.

Profit tells you whether your business model is working. Cash flow tells you whether you have the money available when you need it.

A healthy business needs to monitor both. That’s where good bookkeeping—and a little advisory support—can make all the difference.

Did you know approximately half of small businesses make it to the five-year mark—and only about one-third reach 10 years?

Business longevity takes more than making sales. It requires understanding:

📊 Whether you’re actually profitable
💵 How much cash is available
📈 Which areas are growing
💸 Where money is being lost
🧾 What your business owes

You don’t have to know everything about accounting—but you do need accurate numbers and trusted professionals who can help you understand them.

Good bookkeeping cannot guarantee success, but it can help you spot problems sooner, make informed decisions, and build a stronger business.

Your business deserves more than survival mode. Let’s help it thrive! 💚
