Running a business is challenging enough. Your accounting shouldn't add to the stress. 🚗

The IRS just announced a rare mid-year increase to the standard mileage rate. Effective July 1, 2026, the rate for business use is now 76 cents per mile (up from 72.5 cents).

Here is what we are seeing, and here is the practical path forward we recommend:
📅 Split your logs: Because the rate changed mid-year, you can’t just multiply your total 2026 miles by one number. You will need two totals: one for Jan 1–June 30 and another for July 1–Dec 31.
💼 Update your team: If you reimburse employees for driving, adjust your rates now! Paying the old rate leaves money on the table for your team.

At Holden Moss, we want to help you make confident decisions year-round. Read our short guide on what this change means for your business recordkeeping.

📣Important tax reminder📣

If you filed for a tax extension earlier this year, your new deadline to submit your return is October 15th, and it will be here before you know it.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

🟢You may owe interest and penalties if you have taxes due since April. The extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you have owed taxes since April, the IRS has likely been charging interest since then. Paying your taxes as soon as possible helps minimize those extra costs.
🟢Don’t assume the IRS will contact you. Be proactive and file before the deadline. If you miss the October deadline, expect a penalty. The IRS may eventually reach out, but you might rack up some hefty penalties and interest by then.
🟢Amended returns take longer. If you file now and realize later that something was missing or incorrect, you can still file an amended return. However, amended returns can take months to process. Try to get it right the first time to avoid delays.

If you have questions about your return, or anything tax related, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’re here to help.
