๐ Donโt Miss School education benefits
As the 2026โ2027 school year gets underway, itโs a great time to review potential education-related tax benefits.
From tuition and required school costs to educator classroom expenses, understanding the tax rules may help you save money when you file your taxes.
๐ Higher Education Tax Credits
Two important tax credits may help eligible families:
๐ American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)
โข Up to $2,500 per eligible student
โข May apply to tuition and certain required education expenses
โข Up to 40% of the credit may be refundable, subject to the applicable rules
โข Generally available for the first four years of qualifying higher education
๐ Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC)
โข Up to $2,000 per tax return
โข Can apply to qualifying higher education courses
โข More flexible regarding the number of years it may be claimed
โข Nonrefundable
Income limits and other eligibility requirements apply to both credits.
๐ Educator Classroom Expense Deduction
Are you a Kโ12 teacher, aide, counselor, or principal who purchases qualifying classroom supplies with your own money?
You may be eligible to deduct up to $350 in qualifying educator expenses.
If both spouses filing jointly qualify, each may potentially claim up to $350, for a combined deduction of up to $700.
๐ Scholarships, Grants & Fellowships
Not all education money is necessarily taxable.
Scholarships, grants, and fellowships used for qualified education expenses, such as tuition and required course fees, may be tax-free under applicable rules.
However, amounts used for expenses such as housing, food, or travel may be taxable.
Fellowships with work requirements may also have different tax treatment.
