An update regarding the vehicle mileage deduction and reimbursement rates for 2026.
To help offset rising fuel costs, the IRS issued a rare mid-year increase that applies to all miles driven on or after July 1, 2026:
Business Mileage: Increased to 0.76 per mile (up from 72.5 cents).
Medical / Moving Mileage: Increased to \(0.23.5\) per mile (up from 20.5 cents).
Charitable Mileage: Remains fixed by statute at 0.14 per mile.
What this means for your record keeping:
Because there are two different rates for the year, you must segment your mileage logs into two distinct periods when submitting them to me for preparation of your 2026 income tax return:
Period 1: January 1 – June 30, 2026
Period 2: July 1 – December 31, 2026
Please let me know if you need any assistance updating your mileage tracking or have questions about how this impacts your upcoming income tax filings.
