I’m excited to share that Dillon Bookkeeping Solutions is officially a proud member of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce

As a local business owner, being part of our business community is important to me. I’m looking forward to connecting with other local business owners, learning from one another, building relationships, and supporting the businesses that make our community strong.

I’ve spent more than 30 years in accounting, and today I’m using that experience to help small business owners spend less time dealing with their books and more time doing what they do best.

**You Sent the Invoice… But Did You Get Paid?**

Making a sale and collecting the money are two different things.

You can have a great month, send out plenty of invoices, and still run into cash flow problems if those invoices aren't getting paid.

That's why it's important to regularly review your outstanding invoices.

Ask yourself:

• Which invoices are overdue?
• How long have they been outstanding?
• Have you followed up with the customer?
• Are old invoices still sitting in QuickBooks that may never be collected?

The longer an invoice goes unpaid, the easier it is for it to get forgotten.

Staying on top of your accounts receivable helps you understand what money is **actually coming in**—not just what you hope to collect.

**You did the work. Make sure you're getting paid for it.**

**QuickBooks Tip: Your Bank Feed Is NOT Your Bookkeeping**

One of the biggest misconceptions I see with QuickBooks Online is:

“If all my bank transactions are showing in QuickBooks, my books must be done.”

Not necessarily.

The bank feed is a **starting point**, not the finished product.

Every transaction still needs to be reviewed to make sure it is:

• Categorized to the correct account
• Recorded as an expense, transfer, payment, or other appropriate transaction
• Not a duplicate
• Properly matched to existing transactions
• Assigned to the correct customer, vendor, class, or location when applicable
• Reconciled to the actual bank statement

And here’s the problem: QuickBooks can't always tell the difference between a business expense, an owner draw, a transfer between accounts, or a credit card payment.

That’s where bookkeeping judgment matters.

**A clean bank feed does not automatically equal clean books.**

Before you rely on your QuickBooks reports to make business decisions—or hand them to your tax professional—make sure the underlying transactions have actually been reviewed and reconciled.

*"I have money in the bank, so my business must be doing well."*

Unfortunately, your bank account only tells you how much cash you have today—it doesn't tell you how your business is actually performing.

Your bank balance doesn't show:
✔️ Unpaid bills
✔️ Customer invoices that haven't been collected
✔️ Sales tax you've collected but still owe
✔️ Upcoming payroll or loan payments
✔️ Whether your business is actually profitable

That's why reviewing your financial statements regularly is so important. They give you the information you need to make smart business decisions instead of relying on your checking account balance.
