As payroll specialists, we often run into questions from business owners about what payroll deductions are and why they matter. So, we wanted to share a brief overview.

Payroll deductions are amounts subtracted from your employees' gross wages before their net pay is deposited into their bank accounts. These can include mandatory deductions such as federal and state income taxes; Federal Insurance Contributions Act (F**A) taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare; and voluntary deductions such as retirement plan contributions and health insurance premiums.

Understanding how deductions work is an important part of staying compliant and keeping your team informed. So, if you have questions about payroll for your business, don't hesitate to reach out to our team today. We are here to help.

Holiday bonuses are a meaningful way to recognize employees, but they also have payroll and tax implications that a business owner should consider before issuing payments. Bonuses are generally taxable wages and may require additional tax withholding. Planning ahead helps ensure employees are paid correctly while reducing payroll adjustments later.

As a reminder, certain small, occasional, non-cash gifts (such as holiday food baskets) may qualify as de minimis fringe benefits and generally are not taxable. Gift cards, however, are always considered taxable wages regardless of value.

If you'd like assistance planning your holiday bonus strategy before year-end, give us a call. We're here to help.

The 2027-2028 FAFSA is open as of October 1, 2026. If you or a student you support plans to attend college during the 2027–2028 academic year, it is a good idea to get started on the process early. So, with that in mind, our team wanted to share a few early steps that can help streamline the process:

🔹Create or verify your StudentAid.gov account.
🔹Gather essential financial documentation, including 2025 tax returns, W-2s, and income records.
🔹Determine which parent(s) or contributor(s) will be required to provide information, if necessary.
🔹Review college, state, and scholarship deadlines, as many institutions award aid on a first-come, first-served basis.

While the federal FAFSA deadline is June 30, 2028, many colleges and states set earlier priority deadlines for aid consideration, so submitting your application early can improve access to institutional, state, and need-based aid.

If you have questions about college funding strategies or how education expenses align with your overall financial plan, please contact our office. We are here to assist you.

Paid time off (PTO) includes vacation, sick leave, and personal time that employees earn throughout the year. Before year-end, it is a good idea to make sure your records are accurate and your policies are applied consistently.

Reviewing PTO balances helps prevent employee disputes, ensures your payroll records are accurate, and helps your business comply with state employment laws. Depending on your state's requirements and company policy, unused vacation time may need to be carried over or paid out.

If you would like assistance reviewing your PTO records before year-end, give us a call. We're here to help.

With summer behind us and routines back in full swing, fall brings a natural time to reflect on progress made and refocus on the progress ahead.

However, progress doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes it’s fast and visible. Other times, it’s quiet and barely noticeable.

What matters most is that we keep moving, even when the pace feels slower than we would like. We don’t have to have it all figured out. We just have to keep going.

What is one area of your life where you are making steady progress right now? Share it in the comments. We would love to cheer you on.

Employee records can change throughout the year. Reviewing this information now, before 2026 wraps up, helps ensure payroll and year-end tax forms are prepared accurately.

Incorrect names, addresses, Social Security numbers, or withholding information can delay W-2 processing and require corrected forms. Reviewing employee information before year-end helps avoid unnecessary administrative work during tax season.

If you'd like assistance verifying your employee records before year-end, give us a call. We're here to help.
