Fidelity just told nearly 1,000 small RIAs... grow to $100 million or get out.
Everyone is tiptoeing around what that means. I won't.
This is not a Fidelity story. It's a consolidation story.
Four firms control about 84% of custodial relationships. Private equity is buying up the IMOs and FMOs that used to be independent. And nearly 80% of RIAs have only one custodian.
So ask yourself the hard question. If one company can move the goalposts and put your firm on a deadline, how independent are you?
A lot of advisors are about to find out they were building someone else's business.
Before you jump to the next big name or take the next big check, have the man in the mirror conversation. Why did you go independent in the first place? Does your next partner share your philosophy, or are you about to become advisor number 18,164?
I broke it all down in a new episode. The link is in the comments.
Where do you stand? Is consolidation good for this industry or not?
