O'Hara & Company CPA, Accountants & Consultants No annoying tax professional lingo. Just straight, authoritative and friendly expert advice at a neighborhood rate. There is no cost or obligation to this offer!

My name is Joseph O’Hara, and I am a CPA and Enrolled Agent with the IRS. My firm specializes in small to medium size businesses, and all of their tax and accounting needs. We also specialize in tax resolution and all IRS issues. A few years ago I wanted a way to give back to the community, so I developed the “Comparison Program”. Once a year we select a few local businesses and offer them a chance to throw a second set of eyes on any tax papers 3 years back to now.

If your business files Forms 1099 electronically, an important IRS change is coming.

The IRS is retiring the FIRE system. For tax year 2026 returns filed during the 2027 season, IRIS will become the electronic filing system for information returns.

Key deadlines to know:
• November 1, 2026: Last day for FIRE test filings
• November 9, 2026: Deadline to update existing FIRE TCC applications
• November 19, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET: Final deadline to file through FIRE
• January 1, 2027: IRIS becomes the only electronic filing option

If you file directly, you may need a new IRIS Transmitter Control Code—your existing FIRE TCC will not transfer automatically. If a payroll provider, software platform, or tax professional handles your filings, now is the time to confirm they are ready for the transition.

O’Hara & Company can help Suffolk County and Long Island businesses organize their records, payroll processes, and tax reporting plans before filing season arrives.

October has a way of putting things into perspective. The final quarter of the year is here, and for many business owners, that brings a mix of energy and urgency. There is still time to finish strong, but the window is getting shorter.

This quote is a timely reminder that crossing the finish line is not about pushing harder for its own sake. It is about reconnecting with the reason you started in the first place. That clarity is often what separates a strong finish from a scattered one.

As you move through October, we would love to hear from you: What was the original reason you started your business or took on your biggest goal this year? Share it in the comments. Sometimes the best fuel for finishing strong is remembering where it all began.

If you filed an extension for your 2025 individual tax return, the extended filing deadline is October 15, 2026.

As a reminder, if you filed for an extension, it only gave you more time to file your return; it did not give you more time to pay any taxes.

Here are a few important reminders about the upcoming extended filing deadline:

🔹The sooner you file, the better. And, if you still owe taxes, interest and penalties may already be accruing.
🔹There are no further extensions. October 15th is the final deadline to file your 2025 extended return.
🔹Review your return carefully before filing. Missing documents, incorrect income information, or overlooked deductions can delay processing and may require an amended return later.

If you have questions about your return or need help preparing before the deadline, please contact our office. We’re here to help.

That said, if you would like to review any of these items or talk through things you can do to set yourself up for success next year, please feel free to reach out to our team. We would be happy to help.

With summer behind us and routines back in full swing, fall brings a natural time to reflect on progress made and refocus on the progress ahead.

However, progress doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes it’s fast and visible. Other times, it’s quiet and barely noticeable.

What matters most is that we keep moving, even when the pace feels slower than we would like. We don’t have to have it all figured out. We just have to keep going.

What is one area of your life where you are making steady progress right now? Share it in the comments. We would love to cheer you on.

Twenty-five years ago, the world changed, and the courage, resilience, and unity that followed reminded us of what we are capable of in our darkest moments.

On Patriot Day, we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to pay tribute to the first responders, volunteers, and everyday individuals who showed extraordinary strength when it mattered most.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
