Behind on your federal student loans? If they’re in default, there’s a new online tool to help you figure out your next move. 👀
On September 30, the Department of Education and Treasury launched the Defaulted Loans Support Center on StudentAid.gov. You can now handle more of the process online instead of dealing with mailed forms and faxes. (ed.gov)
You can use it to:
• Review your options for getting out of default
• Apply online
• Upload paperwork and sign agreements
• Make payments and check your progress
• Explore repayment and possible loan discharge options
But friend, logging in does not erase your debt or clear your default. You still have to qualify for an option and complete the required steps.
Two common options are:
Loan rehabilitation: For most federal loans, you make nine on-time, voluntary payments within 10 consecutive months.
Loan consolidation: You combine eligible loans into a new federal loan. This may get you out of default faster, but the effect on your credit history can be different. Compare both before choosing. (studentaid.gov, studentaid.gov)
Before you start, grab your StudentAid.gov login, income information, loan details, and any collection notices. Keep copies of everything you submit and every payment you make.
Feeling overwhelmed? Start by finding out where your loans stand. You don’t have to figure out every step today.
