If you use your car for business, you need to keep a lot of your mileage. And one of the things you must document is the total miles driven during the year as well as the business miles driven. You also want to track miles driven for medical and moving purposes and for charity.
Today is THE DAY to write down your beginning odometer reading. Keep it in your car on whatever recording method you choose to use. Personally, I have a small calendar book and record the Beginning Odometer reading on January 1, the miles driven per various appointments I identify on the day driven. And I record the Ending Odometer reading on December 31.
The Ending Odometer reading for the year just so happens to be the Beginning Odometer for the very next year. Keep a log for each year you want to deduct business use of your car.
