Would you recognize a scam if the voice sounded exactly like someone you know?

AI scams can make familiar fraud tactics more convincing through voice cloning, deepfakes, and personalized messages.

But technology is only part of the problem.

Scammers also rely on trust, urgency, fear, and our natural tendency to respond when someone appears to need help.

Cybersecurity expert Robert Siciliano and I wrote about four practical ways to reduce digital fraud risk, including what to do before acting on an unexpected financial request.

The goal isn’t to distrust everything. It’s to know when to slow down and verify.

When it comes to cybersecurity, technology matters.

So do our reactions.

Scammers often use urgency, fear, trust, or distraction to get us to act before we stop and think.

Cybersecurity expert Robert Siciliano calls the habits that can help us resist those tactics our Strategic Human Firewall™.

In this short video, Robert explains what that means.

Keeping something is still a decision.

Keeping something can feel like doing nothing. But it isn’t.

You already own the stock. You already have the house. You already own the business. So keeping it feels like the default. Selling it feels like the decision. But both are decisions.

One way to challenge that bias is something financial planner Carl Richards calls the Overnight Test:

Suppose you sold it today. You wake up tomorrow with the cash.

Would you buy it back?

A no doesn’t necessarily mean you should sell. A yes doesn’t necessarily mean you should keep everything exactly as it is.

The value of the question is that it forces you to reconsider the status quo.

Maybe the better question becomes:

Why wouldn’t I buy it today?

Or:

Would I buy this much?

Or simply:

If I wouldn’t choose it today, why am I still choosing it?

In this week’s newsletter, I explore the Overnight Test and how it applies to investments, businesses, homes, sentimental possessions, and even purchases you haven’t made yet.

Artificial intelligence is making fraud more sophisticated, targeted, and personal.

Voice cloning, deepfakes, and identity spoofing can make fraudulent requests increasingly convincing and harder to recognize.

On Wednesday, October 21 at 7 p.m. Eastern, I’m hosting cybersecurity expert Robert Siciliano for a live Zoom event:

Protecting Your Wealth in the Age of AI: Practical Strategies Against Digital Fraud

We’ll discuss how today’s scams are evolving and practical ways to recognize deception, verify suspicious requests, and reduce your vulnerability.

The event is open to Apprise clients, friends of the firm, and friends and family members who might benefit.

Knowing how much money you have is important.

Knowing what you want that money to make possible matters even more.

I recently joined Tony Steuer on the Get Ready: Before Life Happens podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about money, life transitions, and financial confidence.

We started with my own money story and how those early experiences eventually led me to focus my work on women facing new beginnings.

We also talked about:

• Why our early experiences with money can influence the decisions we make decades later
• The sometimes-difficult shift from saving for retirement to actually spending what we've accumulated
• Why I encourage couples to have regular "money dates"
• Why slowing down can be valuable during transitions such as divorce and widowhood
• Why asking questions is one of the best ways to build financial confidence

And we spent some time on an idea central to the way I approach financial planning.

Money isn't our only form of capital.

We also have our Time, Energy, and Attention.

Taken together, I call these our TEAM of Capital.

The objective isn't simply to accumulate more. It's to align these resources with what matters most to you.

Thanks to Tony for having me on.

What is your money for?

Most of us learn to think about money as protection.

Pay the bills. Build an emergency fund. Save for retirement. Prepare for what can go wrong.

Those things matter.

But financial freedom isn't simply about reaching a particular number.

I think of it as having a greater ability to choose.

Sometimes you create that freedom by spending money. Sometimes by not spending it. Sometimes by keeping your obligations manageable. And sometimes, after years of saving, by finally giving yourself permission to use what you've built.

In this week's blog, I explore financial freedom from several angles, including why the best savers sometimes struggle to spend, how money can protect your Time, Energy, and Attention, why a purchase can actually reduce your freedom, and four questions that can help you evaluate the tradeoff.

The question underneath all of it is simple:

What do you want your money to make possible?

I recently had the opportunity to join Tony Steuer on the Get Ready: Before Life Happens podcast.

We talked about a subject that comes up frequently in my work: How do you make good financial decisions when life itself is changing?

Our conversation included my own money story and why I work with women facing new beginnings, along with:

• Moving from saving money to spending what you've accumulated
• Having regular money conversations with your spouse or partner
• Understanding what you own, what you owe, and what you spend
• Avoiding rushed decisions during major life transitions
• Using your Time, Energy, Attention, and Money in ways that support what matters most to you

One thing I hope listeners take away is that you don't have to know all the answers.

Ask questions.

Understanding where you stand is often the first step toward understanding what's possible.

Thanks to Tony for having me on the show.

We spend a lot of time asking what we want to add to our lives.

Another goal

Another trip

Another activity

Another accomplishment

But there are still only 24 hours in a day.

Eventually, making room for something that matters may require letting go of something else.

That's the idea behind this week's blog.

Subtraction doesn't always mean quitting.

Sometimes you stop something.

Sometimes you do less of it.

Sometimes you let someone else help.

And sometimes the hardest part is questioning something you've continued doing simply because you think you should.

In the article, I share several examples from my own life and a five-question test that can help you think about what still deserves your Time, Energy, Attention, and Money.

One question to consider:

What are you still doing because you think you should, rather than because it still deserves a place in your life? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

What does retirement have to look like?

For many of us, the default answer is something like this:

You work until a certain date. Then you stop.

But life doesn't always have to change that way.

Sometimes you can turn the dial before you flip the switch.

That could mean working fewer hours, giving up some responsibilities, taking more time away, trying something new, or simply creating enough room to figure out what you want next.

I've experienced both approaches in my own life. There have been times when turning work down gave me more time for the people who mattered most. There have also been times when I eventually needed to stop preserving my options and commit.

That's part of what I explore in this week's blog.

The question I'd leave you with is:

What could you turn down in your life before deciding whether you need to turn it off?
