The reality is: More wealth comes with more exposure.
A car accident, a slip and fall, an injury on your property, any of these can turn into a lawsuit, and the more assets you have, the bigger a target you become. Umbrella insurance is one of the simplest, most cost-effective ways to close that gap and protect what you've built.
Do you have enough liability coverage for where your finances actually stand today?

Here's a common misconception: Having a will doesn't avoid probate.
What a will actually does is name an executor and make the process significantly smoother for the people settling your estate.
If avoiding probate entirely is your goal, that's where trusts come in, since they can bypass the court process altogether. Two different tools, two different jobs.
Money without a purpose has a way of disappearing.
Without a plan, it slowly bleeds into lifestyle creep. More takeout, a nicer car, small upgrades that aren't inherently bad on their own but add up fast if your regular income can't actually support them. The problem is there's no second windfall coming. Overspend it, and ten years later you're left with the expensive habits and none of the money to back them up.

First thing, do nothing. Don't buy a car, don't quit your job, don't make any massive lifestyle changes. Give yourself time to see what you actually are looking to accomplish.

Can you use long-term care insurance for in-home care? In many cases, yes, though it depends on your specific policy.
Some policies cover professional aides who help with meals, medication, and personal hygiene, so you or a loved one can stay independent and close to family for as long as possible. Certain policies also cover home modifications like ramps or grab bars.
Coverage isn't guaranteed across the board. Not every policy includes a home-care provision, and some require working with licensed agencies to qualify for benefits. The best next step is reviewing your specific contract, or reaching out to us to walk through what yours actually covers.
There's nothing wrong with inheriting a windfall, but your skill set is still the same one you had before it landed in your account. You're not suddenly Warren Buffett.
What actually protects that money long-term is a disciplined, rules-based portfolio, not confidence borrowed from a lucky break. There's an old saying: shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations. Wealth gets built, then spent down, when there's no structure behind it.
If you don't have an estate plan, the government already has one for you, and chances are you won't like it.
A will is the starting point, deciding who gets what and how, whether that's through a trust or directly as a named beneficiary. But the plan doesn't stop there. A durable power of attorney and a healthcare proxy matter just as much, since they cover what happens if you're in the hospital and can't make decisions for yourself.
Do you have an estate plan, or is the government's default plan your plan?
When you own real estate and you pass it down, it can trigger a tax bill your heirs aren't prepared for.
Estate taxes can reach 40% at the federal level, plus additional state inheritance tax depending on where you live. Without cash set aside to cover it, heirs are sometimes forced to make poorly-timed financial moves just to meet a court-imposed deadline.
Planning ahead for that liability can be the difference between a smooth transition and a rushed, costly one.
Would your family have the cash on hand to cover an unexpected tax bill?

A will tells the court who's in charge and how you'd like your assets distributed. That's valuable, but it doesn't keep your estate out of probate. Your executor still has to go through the court process to settle things.
Trusts work differently. When set up correctly, they let assets pass directly to beneficiaries without probate involvement at all, which can mean a faster, more private transition for your family.
Neither document is better - they solve different problems. Knowing which one addresses your specific goals is the first step toward building an estate plan that actually works the way you expect it to.

What should you look for in a financial advisor's experience?
Start with credentials, like the CFP designation, which signal formal training and accountability to a professional standard. Then look deeper:
➝ Have they worked with clients in situations similar to you?
➝ Can they clearly explain how they make decisions and how those decisions connect to your goals?
The right advisor isn't just qualified on paper. They communicate clearly and have a process built around your specific financial picture.
