Now that nine months of the year are already in the books, you have a lot more information to work with than you did back at the beginning of the year.

Maybe your income landed somewhere different than expected, your business had a stronger year, or something changed in your personal finances. By October, there’s less guessing and more actual activity to evaluate.

That also gives your tax professional time to review what’s changed, identify potential tax planning opportunities, and talk through your options before the year closes.

There are still three months left in 2026. Let’s make them part of your tax planning. Reach out today.

The tax extension you filed back in April bought you six extra months. Now, there are only days left on the clock.

October 15 is when that extra time runs out. Your 2025 return is still waiting to be filed, and if you still have an unpaid tax balance, you’ll need a plan for that too.

Not every dollar of income comes with a tax form attached.

That may be especially noticeable this year. The rules changed for 2026, with the 1099-NEC reporting threshold increasing from $600 to $2,000. You could earn income from a client or customer without receiving a 1099-NEC for it.

You’re still responsible for reporting what you earned. Consider the forms a cross-check, not the complete record of your income.

Technology gives us no shortage of reasons to spend money, with new phones, another subscription, and the latest upgrades always competing for our dollars.

Luckily, there are ways you can get a little more out of your technology budget:

▪️ Try a fix before replacing a device. A new battery, more storage, or a good cleanup may be all it needs.
▪️ Take another look at your subscriptions. That $14.99 monthly charge may not seem like much until you realize it’s nearly $180 a year.
▪️ Don’t skip software updates. They can fix problems, address security issues, and help keep your devices running reliably.
▪️ Replace technology when it stops doing what you need it to do, not just because a newer model is available.

There will always be something newer available. You still get to choose when it’s time to spend.

One of the easiest things to outgrow in business is the tax strategy that got you started.

As your business reaches new milestones, opportunities and responsibilities can change the way you approach taxes. Hiring employees, increasing profits, or expanding your business are just a few examples.

Our latest blog looks at why those same milestones can influence your tax planning (link in comments).

On the surface, the American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit look similar. Dig into the details, and there’s a lot that sets them apart.

And those distinctions aren't just technicalities. They determine who can claim each credit, what expenses count, and how much of your education costs could come back to you at tax time.

College comes with enough expenses already. Missing a tax credit doesn't need to be one of them.

Missing documentation could get in the way of claiming a charitable deduction.

Keeping the right records is just as important as the charitable donation itself. The documentation you need depends on the type of donation and may include receipts, written acknowledgments, or additional records for certain non-cash gifts. Keeping those records organized now can make filing your tax return that much easier.

Not sure which records to keep? Reach out.
