If you're a small business and you pay other small businesses as sub-contractors, I'm sure you're already familiar with 1099s. However, there is a big change for 2026. The 1099 threshold jumped from $600 to $2,000. So previously if you paid someone more than $600, then you had to issue them a 1099. Now you don't need to issue a 1099 until you pay more than $2,000.

Remember, it's a best practice to get a W-9 from any sub-contractor before you pay them anything, so you'll have all the information you need in case you need to send them a 1099.

Last March the PTO treasurer at my daughters elementary school reached out to me b/c their accountant was going to charge them ~$1500 for their 990, which is outrageous. I told them that I'd do it for free, just give me a shout-out on Facebook 😁 Which they did, so thank you Deibler PTO ❤️

There is one issue that I've encountered recently and it keeps popping up. That is self-employed individuals and Social Security. Social Security benefits are based on your highest 35 years of earnings. A lot of times people want ways to reduce their self-employment tax, but by doing that, you are also reducing you future SS benefits. Working under the table may feel great, b/c you're not paying taxes, but if you do that for 40 years, then go to collect SS, you find out that your benefit is negligible.

The chill of fall is in the air, and now is a great time to find a new CPA. I had at least 5 people call me last March and tell me that they needed a new accountant b/c their old accountant retired. If your accountant retired, start looking for a replacement now, not during tax season :-)
