📊 Let's actually dig into your Profit & Loss statement, because skimming it once a year at tax time isn't doing you any favors.
Here's what's really on there:
Revenue - everything you brought in from sales or services, before anything is subtracted.
Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) - the direct cost of delivering your product or service (materials, direct labor, etc.). Revenue minus COGS = Gross Profit.
Operating Expenses - everything else it takes to run the business: rent, software, marketing, admin, payroll. Subtract these from Gross Profit and you get Net Income -what you actually kept.
Why it matters beyond tax season:
✅ Rising expenses relative to revenue is often the first sign of a margin problem — long before it becomes a cash problem
✅ A healthy-looking bank account doesn't always mean a profitable business (timing of payments can hide a lot)
✅ Reviewing your P&L monthly, not just annually, means you catch problems while they're still small
Your P&L isn't just a report for taxes, it's one of the best tools you have for running the business day to day.
