Contributions ≠ Earnings.

Inside the same Roth IRA, your money plays by two completely different rule sets. Most savers don't learn the difference until a withdrawal lands them with taxes and a 10% penalty they never saw coming.

Assumption: "It's all my money, I can take it out whenever I want."

Reality: Your contributions are accessible anytime, tax-free and penalty-free. Your earnings are gated by age 59½ AND the 5-year rule.

Here's the wrinkle most people miss: that 5-year clock starts the day you opened your first Roth, not the day you opened each new account.

Swipe through for the contribution-versus-earnings split, explained in plain language.

A blind spot is not a gap in your knowledge. It is a gap in your view.

And on most family balance sheets, there are four of them quietly draining wealth. None of them show up on a monthly statement.

>> Carrying too much (or too little) investment risk without realizing it
>> Holding cash reserves that earn nothing while inflation chips away
>> Insurance coverage that would not hold up if disability or death came early
>> No written system tracking what is saved against what is spent

If your advisor has never walked you through these four, you have not had a financial plan review. You have had a portfolio check-in.

There is a meaningful difference, and it usually shows up at the worst possible moment.

"Fee-based" does not mean "no commissions." It just means the advisor charges a fee. Whether that fee is the only thing you pay is a completely separate question, and one most clients never think to ask.

Before you sign anything, ask for these six answers in writing:

>> The exact annual advisory fee, stated as both a percentage and a dollar amount based on your current portfolio.

>> Whether fund expense ratios are charged on top of that advisory fee. (They almost always are. That is a second layer of cost most clients never see.)

>> What triggers a fee change as your portfolio grows or crosses tier thresholds.

>> Which services, if any, are commission-based rather than fee-based.

>> A clear list of what is excluded from the base fee. Estate coordination? Tax planning? Business consulting?

>> A written, all-in cost estimate for your first 12 months, signed.

If an advisor hesitates on any of these, you already have your answer before you ever become a client.

Transparent pricing is not a courtesy. It is the baseline.

You can be 62, fully retired, and still owe taxes on a Roth IRA withdrawal. Most people don't see it coming.

The common belief is that age 59½ is the finish line for tax-free Roth earnings. It isn't. There's a second gate almost nobody checks, and missing it triggers income tax plus a 10% penalty on earnings, even in retirement.

The IRS requires both conditions before earnings come out tax-free:

>> Gate 1: You must be at least 59½ years old.
>> Gate 2: Five years must have passed since your first Roth contribution.

Open your first Roth at 58, and you can't touch the earnings tax-free until 63. The clock starts with your first contribution, not your birthday.

This is the difference between tax preparation and tax planning. Preparation looks backward at what already happened. Planning looks forward at the holding periods, conversion timing, and withdrawal sequencing that decide whether your retirement income arrives tax-free or with a surprise bill attached.

If you're within five years of your first Roth contribution, or thinking about a conversion, the timing matters more than the amount.

Most people guess 10-15%. The real number is 45%.

Nearly half of working-age Americans have zero retirement account savings. Not underfunded. Zero.

That reframes the conversation. A gap this widespread is not a fringe issue. It is the baseline reality for a huge portion of the workforce.

Here is the blind spot worth naming:

>> If you assume "most people are saving something," you underestimate how compressed your own timeline really is.
>> If nearly half your peers start from zero, the runway to build a meaningful plan is shorter than the headlines suggest.
>> Retirement readiness is not just about how much you have saved. It is about how clearly you see where you actually stand.

A second opinion on your plan is not about doubting your decisions. It is about pressure-testing the assumptions underneath them.

The gap was never someone else's problem.
