You spent 30–40 years learning how to save. But once retirement arrives, who teaches you how to actually spend it?

I meet people with $1–2 million saved who are still nervous about spending $10,000 on a vacation.

And honestly, I understand why.

Your account balance doesn't tell you:
• What you can safely spend this year
• What happens if the market has a bad year
• How much you can enjoy while you're healthy enough to travel
• Whether you can help your kids or grandkids without putting your own retirement at risk

A retirement plan shouldn't just tell you how your money is invested.

It should help you understand what your money can actually DO for you.

Because you didn't spend 40 years saving just to spend retirement afraid to touch your money.

Your money should support the life you've worked so hard to build.

Is Social Security going away?

It’s a question we hear all the time and the answer isn’t as simple as a dramatic “yes” or “no.”

There’s an important difference between Social Security going away and the possibility that changes may eventually be necessary.

But here’s the bigger retirement-planning question:

Should you make a permanent claiming decision today based entirely on what you think Congress might do tomorrow?

Instead, your retirement plan should be built around reasonable assumptions and flexible enough to be stress-tested if things change.

And remember, Social Security decisions can affect more than just your own benefit. For married couples, claiming strategies can also impact spousal and survivor benefits.

We wouldn't build a 30-year retirement plan around predicting Congress.

We'd build one with enough flexibility to adjust when we know what actually changes.

Would you get all of your political news from one network?

Whether it’s Fox, CNN, or anything else, if that’s the only perspective you ever hear, you’re only getting one lens.

So why would you want one investment manager making every decision with your retirement money?

Every money manager has a philosophy.

Growth. Value. Tactical. Income. Passive.

And every philosophy has environments where it shines and environments where it doesn’t.

That doesn’t mean one manager is bad.

It means nobody is right all the time.

That’s why diversification may deserve to go beyond simply owning different investments.

Sometimes, it can mean diversifying the philosophies making the decisions.

At Waymaker Legacy & Wealth, we believe retirement planning should account for uncertainty rather than assuming one approach will always work.

You’ve spent your entire career knowing another paycheck was coming in two weeks. Why should retirement suddenly feel like a gamble?

While you’re working, your paycheck provides consistency even when the market has a bad day.

But in retirement, many people suddenly find themselves depending heavily on their portfolio to fund their lifestyle.

That can create a very different kind of stress.

You can’t control the markets, inflation, interest rates, wars, or what happens in Washington.

But you can control how much risk you take, where your income comes from, your liquidity, your tax strategy, and how much of your retirement plan depends on the market cooperating.

At Waymaker Legacy & Wealth, we believe:

We don't build retirement plans hoping everything goes right. We build them asking what happens when something goes wrong.

Control what you can control and don't let the things you can't control determine whether retirement works.

Many retirement mistakes don't happen when you retire, they're discovered years later.

Early retirement often feels smooth. But as time goes on, new challenges can arise, including:

✔️ Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
✔️ Medicare premium increases
✔️ Higher taxes
✔️ The financial impact of losing a spouse

These are issues many retirees don't think about until they're already facing them.

A retirement plan shouldn't just help you retire, it should help you navigate every stage that follows.

If you'd like to review whether your current plan is prepared for the years ahead, we're here to help.

Managing your own investments?

First, congratulations. Many DIY investors have done an incredible job building their retirement savings.

But here's the question we ask every self-directed investor:

If the market never exceeded your expectations again, would your retirement plan still work?

Retirement isn't just about earning strong returns. It's about creating a plan that accounts for:
✔️ Taxes
✔️ Social Security
✔️ Inflation
✔️ Healthcare expenses
✔️ Reliable retirement income

Investments are important but they're only one piece of the puzzle.

Retirement planning goes far beyond your portfolio.

How confident are you in your retirement plan?

Here are three questions every retiree should be able to answer:
✔️ Where will my income come from?
✔️ What happens if the market drops?
✔️ What happens financially if my spouse passes away?

Knowing your account balance is important, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

A retirement plan should provide answers, confidence, and peace of mind.

Many people believe retirement success depends on how much money they've saved.

But what if the timing of your retirement matters just as much?

Two retirees can have identical portfolios, yet one may enjoy lasting financial security while the other struggles, simply because of how the market performed during their first few years of retirement.

That's why a retirement plan shouldn't be built for average conditions. It should be built to weather the unexpected.

If you'd like to see whether your retirement plan is prepared for different market conditions, we'd love to help.

You can do almost everything right financially and still lose hundreds of thousands unnecessarily to taxes in retirement.

I recently met with someone who had saved diligently her entire life, but because most of her money was in qualified accounts, required minimum distributions and higher Medicare costs are now creating major tax challenges.

The problem wasn’t poor investing, it was a lack of long-term tax planning.

Retirement planning should include more than growing assets. It should focus on helping you keep more of what you worked so hard to build.

Proactive tax planning matters long before retirement begins.
