Two years ago, I started Your Elite Bookkeeper, LLC while still working a very demanding full-time corporate accounting job at Orlando Utilities Commission.
For that first year, I juggled both. I worked my regular job during the day and squeezed my business in wherever I could โ early mornings, nights, weekends.
Then, in order to keep growing, it was time to quit my cushy corporate gig.
So I did. I jumped. And holy cow, have I flown.
I could list so many things I love about working for myself and the work I do for my clients.
But owning my time is at the top of that list. Being in complete and total control of what my days look like. After spending an entire career in the corporate world, itโs a feeling of freedom I didnโt know existed.
If youโve been climbing the corporate ladder your whole career, what would it look like if you built your own? Iโll tell you, itโs life changing.

This week, Iโm working with a single-member LLC to evaluate whether an S-Corp election makes sense, determine whether a late election is available, and handle the S-election filing.
That also means helping the owner understand what comes next โ payroll, reasonable compensation, and how operating as an S-Corp changes the way they pay themselves.
๐ Accurate books are important, but sometimes business owners need more than reconciliations and transaction categorization.
With 20+ years of accounting experience, I help my clients understand the bigger picture and navigate the accounting decisions that come with running and growing a business.

The Balance Sheet is probably the financial report I spend the most time explaining to clients - and the most time cleaning up.
Unlike your P&L, which shows activity over a period of time, your Balance Sheet is a
It shows three basic things:
๐ฐ ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐๐ โ what your business owns
๐ณ ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ โ what your business owes
๐ ๐๐พ๐๐ถ๐๐ โ whatโs left after liabilities are subtracted from assets
Your Balance Sheet can tell you things your P&L canโt โ like how much debt youโre carrying, what customers still owe you, what you owe vendors, and how much equity has built up in the business.

๐ ๐๐ฝ: Profit vs. Cash โ because having a profitable business doesnโt always mean you have cash in the bank.
Letโs say your business has $100,000 in revenue, and it cost you $60,000 in direct costs to earn that revenue.
Your ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ณ๐ถ๐ ๐ถ๐ $๐ฐ๐ฌ,๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ.
That also means your gross margin is 40% โ for every $1.00 you bring in, ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ $๐ฌ.๐ฐ๐ฌ ๐ถ๐ ๐น๐ฒ๐ณ๐ after covering the direct cost of the sale.
That $0.40 still has to cover all of your other business expenses โ rent, insurance, administrative costs, etc. โ before you get to your actual net profit.
This is why I pay attention to gross profit and gross margin when reviewing financials. Revenue going up is great, but

๐ ๐๐ฝ: The Balance Sheet โ what it is and why it matters just as much as your P&L.
๐ Financials 101: What is a P&L?
Your Profit & Loss Statement (P&L) is one of the most important reports for your business.
It shows your revenue, subtracts the costs and expenses of running the business, and tells you whatโs left โ your profit or loss.
Sounds simple, but thereโs a lot more information in this report than just the bottom line.
For example, if your sales increased by 20% but your expenses increased by 35%, thatโs something you want to know.
The goal isnโt just to ask โDid I make money?โ
Itโs to understand why you made what you made โ and what changed.
๐ Next up: Iโll dig into gross profit and why itโs an important number to watch.
๐ A big part of what I do goes beyond keeping the books accurate.
I want my clients to understand their numbers.
Most business owners never took an accounting class - so getting a Balance Sheet or P&L doesnโt necessarily mean they know what to look for or what those numbers are telling them.
๐ก This is why I educate all of my clients and walk through their financials with them, answering questions, and helping it all make sense.
So, Iโm starting a Financials 101 series to break down some of the basics - Balance Sheets, P&Ls, gross margin, cash flow and more.
๐ You donโt need to be an accountant to understand your financials - you just need someone willing to explain them.
๐ก A recent example of why experience in accounting matters...
One of my clients had a recurring charge from LinkedIn for nearly $2,000. ๐ณ
At first glance, it didn't look alarming - businesses use LinkedIn all the time.
However, because I'm familiar with my client's business and spending patterns, I asked about it. ๐
They had no idea the charge was coming.
After contacting LinkedIn, they were able to have the charge refunded. โ
This is one of the biggest differences between simply categorizing transactions and actually reviewing your books.
๐ Sometimes the value of a good accountant isn't in the reports I prepare - it's in the questions I ask.
๐ When I advertise my services, I make it a point to say that I'm a CPA + MBA with 20+ years of corporate accounting experience.
I do this because I want business owners to understand who I am, professionally.
โ๏ธ Educated
โ๏ธ Experienced
โ๏ธ Licensed
And someone who genuinely loves accounting.
I don't need a roadmap. I don't need guidance from my clients to figure out what needs to be done.
I review your books, identify what needs attention, and get to work.
Over the years, I've handled thousands of reconciliations, financial statements, accounting processes, and balance sheet issues. That experience matters.
Anyone can categorize transactions.
The real value comes from understanding the story behind the numbers, recognizing when something doesn't look right, and knowing how to fix it.
That's the difference between bookkeeping and accounting.
One thing about working with me - if thereโs an issue, I donโt just point it out and leave my clients to figure it out on their own. ๐ป
One of my clients recently transitioned from QuickBooks to Buildium and we ran into some accounting-related system issues after the conversion. Iโve been working directly with Buildium support to troubleshoot the problems, identify workarounds, and keep things moving forward - while also keeping the client updated throughout the process so theyโre never left wondering whatโs going on. ๐๐
Thatโs part of the value I provide.
Not just bookkeeping. Not just reports.
But being a true accounting partner who helps clients navigate problems, communicates with vendors/software providers, and makes sure things are handled correctly behind the scenes. ๐ค๐
What should you expect from me when Iโm closing out your month?
Itโs not just me working quietly in the background and sending reports.
A proper close is collaborative โ and youโll hear from me when I need to make sure everything is right.
That can look like:
โข Questions on transactions that need clarification ๐ค
โข Requests for statements or missing documentation ๐
โข Follow-ups on anything that doesnโt fully tie out ๐
โข Confirmation of unusual or one-off activity
These details matter when it comes to your financials, and that's how I ensure your financials are not just complete, but accurate and reliable.
