A Historical item about 9-11 and the networks. I hope I can do the story justice and show the team work it takes. Having worked in TV for years, I found this fascinating and touching all at the same time.
This is in my words as I recall the story and talking with a Captioner.
For the early morning News Programs for the networks all of the Closed Captioners, as they are called, are all in the same remote location in New York. They work the morning shows GMA, Good Morning and the Today Show.
After the news shows are done, they all leave as the daily programing has CC already accounted for in their programs. However, news programs are done live by humans that have to type the conversations, banter and interviews that happen.
When news of the towers being hit, the news stations went back to live news coverage. This captioners, less than a half dozen as I understand it, stayed in place. They then captioned for all the news agencies on TV, without stopping, the live 24x7 coverage that happened for the next few days. The first two days there were no breaks for them as they had to stay live with the coverage.
Their work allowed the hearing impaired to be aware of what was happening and have the same news as all of us that are blessed to hear.
I have talked with a captioner that had a friend working that day. I have also read the story of their work.
Thank you to the Closed Captioners for your heroic efforts that day
