What makes a fixed annuity “fixed”?

A fixed annuity generally credits interest according to the terms of the insurance contract rather than having its contract value directly invested in the stock market.

That doesn't mean there aren't important considerations. Contract length, credited rates, surrender charges, withdrawal provisions, liquidity needs, inflation, and the financial strength of the issuing insurer can all matter.

This week's video looks at how annuities generally work, from funding the contract to the options that may be available later. We also discuss why fees, surrender charges, withdrawal provisions, and contract guarantees matter.
