Law Update: October 1 Changes You Should Know About

A few new Florida laws took effect this week, and a couple of them could directly impact your paycheck, business expenses, or property. Here is a quick breakdown from the team at BD Tax Service:

• Minimum Wage Reaches $15/hr: Florida’s minimum wage officially rose to $15.00 per hour on September 30 (tipped base pay is now $11.98/hour). Business owners will need to make sure payroll systems are updated to reflect the new rates for October paychecks.

• Strict Penalties for Rental Application Fraud: Submitting fake pay stubs, forged documents, or false identities on a rental application is now a third-degree felony in Florida. Landlords also have a streamlined process to terminate leases involving fraudulent applications.

• Car Accident Reporting Threshold: For minor fender benders involving property damage only, mandatory police reporting moves from $500 up to $2,000. (Note: Accidents involving any injury or hit-and-run must still be reported regardless of damage).

• License Plate Frames: Decorative plate frames are officially permitted under state law, provided they do not obscure the license plate numbers or registration decal.

• Career Offender Registration: Repeat violent offenders face stricter registration requirements, including mandatory driver's license designations and shorter windows to report address or vehicle changes.

​If it’s been a little quiet over here, it’s because I am currently completely immersed in a massive, multi-year financial reconstruction project for a client.
