You can shoot a decent score and know you did not play well.

You can shoot a disappointing score and know you are getting better.

That is one of the things I love about golf. It forces you to look beyond the number.

Did you make better decisions?
Did you stay patient?
Did you recover well?
Did you commit to the process?

Life and leadership are similar.

Not all progress shows up immediately on the scoreboard.

Sometimes the habits are improving before the results are visible.
Sometimes the foundation is being built before anyone notices.
Sometimes the real win is staying committed when the score does not yet reflect the work.

The number matters.

But the trend, the discipline, and the process matter too.

The longer I lead, the more I believe leadership is often about asking the better question.

The best leaders I have learned from do not dominate every room.

They listen.
They create clarity.
They help people think.
They make expectations clear.
They give others room to grow.

Having answers matters.

But asking the right question can change the entire direction of a conversation.

A better question can uncover the real issue.
A better question can create ownership.
A better question can help someone arrive at a solution they actually believe in.

Leadership is not about proving you are the smartest person in the room.

It is about helping the room get better.

One of my children is entering high school this year, and it has made me think a lot about time.

It feels like yesterday that we were talking about kindergarten, backpacks, and first-day nerves.

Now the conversations are different.
Classes.
Schedules.
Activities.
Independence.
The next stage of life.

As a parent, it is a reminder that the days can feel long while the years move quickly.

Leadership has seasons too.

There are seasons to build.
Seasons to coach.
Seasons to let go.
Seasons to trust that what you have taught is taking root.

Whether it is family, business, or personal growth, the next chapter often arrives faster than expected.

The challenge is to be present enough to recognize the chapter you are in while preparing for the one ahead.

After 12 weeks of renovation, our family is finally preparing to move into our new home.

There were plenty of moments when it felt like nothing was coming together.

Dust everywhere.
Boxes everywhere.
Decisions everywhere.
A few things taking longer than expected.

Then, slowly, the picture started to change.

Rooms began to feel like rooms.
Plans became real.
The mess started to look like progress.

That has been a good reminder for me.

Most meaningful growth looks messy in the middle.

Building a business.
Raising a family.
Leading a team.
Improving your health.
Preparing for a new chapter.

We often judge progress too early, before the work has had enough time to show up.

Sometimes the middle is not proof that things are failing.

It is proof that something is being built.

Anyone who plays golf knows the feeling.

You hit a bad drive, and the immediate temptation is to make up for it with a heroic recovery shot.

Most of the time, that only makes things worse.

Golf has taught me that discipline often beats brilliance. The best next move is not always the most impressive one. Sometimes it is simply getting back in position.

Leadership works the same way.

A tough conversation, a missed opportunity, or a bad decision does not require overcorrection. It requires composure, perspective, and a smart next step.

In business, family, and life, the response after the mistake often says more than the mistake itself.

Progress is rarely about perfection.

It is about recovering well.

What is a lesson you learned from a mistake that ultimately made you better?

**Lessons Beyond Finance: Trust Is the Whole Business**

A few weeks ago, I got an alert that a client's retirement account was being transferred out — to a firm I didn't recognize, with no heads-up from her. This is someone I've worked with for 18 years, with a strong personal and professional relationship the whole way through. We'd spoken six weeks earlier about updates to her portfolio. It didn't add up.

I reached out. No response. For a stretch, I didn't know what I was dealing with — had I missed something, had she simply decided to move on, or was something worse going on.

It turned out she'd been signing paperwork she believed was for her estate plan — a will, a trust.

It wasn't.

It was a transfer authorization. A significant penalty, waiting to happen.

We caught it. Cancelled before it went through.

Here's the lesson: 18 years of trust didn't stop this from almost happening. Trust isn't a soft skill in this business — it's the entire foundation. Not just trust in your advisor, but a standing rule for yourself.

Not sure what you're signing? Stop. Call your advisor first.

Even better, ask your advisor for 3 trusted people they work with to handle estate planning.

Verify before you sign. Every time. No exceptions.
