There is a test for whether your pricing is wrong, and it takes about four seconds.

When you sell the work at that price, do you resent the client while you are doing it?

That is not a character flaw. It is a number showing up as a feeling, because nothing in your business was ever set up to show it to you as a number.

I think that happens more than we admit. We were taught how we spend money and almost never how to think about it, so the thinking still happens, it just comes out sideways. As resentment when the price is too low. As guilt when a friend apologizes at dinner for something she built. As envy when someone is further along, even though you are friends with her and could simply ask her how she did it. As a strange kind of pride in the phrase "I charge a lot less than those other people," which gets worn like a badge and is not humility.

Four feelings, four numbers nobody put in front of you.

The line I keep coming back to is from Deuteronomy 8. It does not say God rains wealth down on you. It says he gives you the power to create it. He rained manna in the wilderness and it was enough for that day, but that was a different season and a different thing entirely.

One of my friends says it more simply than I can. Money in the hands of good people does good things.

So why not you?

Hey friends! Ever felt like you're running in circles with your business? 🤔

You're not alone! Many business owners face ups and downs, especially when it comes to profits and paychecks.

Today, we're diving into a real question from a fellow entrepreneur: "Some months I profit, some months I don't pay myself. Is this normal?"

Let's break it down:

1. **Profit vs. Cash Flow**: Just because you see profit on paper doesn't mean you have cash in hand. Understanding the difference is crucial.

2. **Marketing Challenges**: Hiring help for ads can be a double-edged sword. Are you seeing results? If not, it might be time to reassess.

3. **Know Your Numbers**: You need to learn enough about what you're outsourcing to ensure it's working for you. If it’s not, don’t hesitate to make changes.

4. **Community Support**: Remember, we’re all in this together. Share your experiences and let’s learn from each other!

Have you ever faced similar challenges? What strategies have worked for you? Let’s chat in the comments! 💬

I'm not even going to say this nicely. Expensify is not made for the average business owner. If you don't have an accounting department, a full time business manager, or an outsourced accounting firm like ours working alongside you, it is not built for you. It's complicated.

I've run into a lot of businesses using it who don't have it connected to QuickBooks. So they're entering everything into Expensify, then manually entering it again into QuickBooks. Let's do the math on that. You're doing the same job twice. Sure, it makes life easier for your employees to submit expenses. But if everyone else on the back end is stuck re-entering it all, is that really what we're trying to do here, make life easy for employees at your expense?

You're the boss. Make life easy on yourself and get a system that actually works for how you run things.

What expense tool are you using right now? Send me a DM, I'd love to hear if it's actually working for you.

If you're an entrepreneur, you understand this struggle. When you become one, your friend group starts to look different. It's no fault of theirs, they just don't live in the world you live in anymore.

We were sharing this with some friends last night. Someone told us about being at a small group, and a business owner there said, "hey, can y'all pray for me, we have a month and a half of runway before our business has to close." Everyone in the room just gave him blank stares. But if you're running a business, you understand that completely. Things took a downturn this year, and I might have to let a third of my employees go. That's just a different level of friend, someone who gets it. We felt so blessed to sit down to dinner with some entrepreneur friends last night and just talk shop.

Have your friendships shifted since you started your business? Send me a DM, I'd love to hear about it.

I heard a saying once: you can spend a lot of time chasing butterflies with a net. It looks cute, but you'll never actually catch one that way. What you can do is build a beautiful garden and attract them instead.

At the risk of sounding woo-woo, you attract what you set your mind on. You really do. If you set your mind on self-pity, looking around at other people and resenting their success, that's exactly what you're going to attract. You'll draw in other people who are willing to sit in the ditch and wallow with you. Or, you can get up, go take notes, and figure out what they're doing that you're not. I've watched this play out in our own business. You get to choose your mindset.

What's one mindset shift that's actually changed things in your business? Send me a DM, I'd love to hear it.

I'm going to stand before Jesus someday and answer for the way I ran my business. That's not a scary thought to me, it's a compass. The Bible talks about using an even scale, doing business the way you'd be proud to stand in front of Him and explain. And there's a piece of that I come back to often: swear to your own hurt. If you say you're going to do something, you do it, even when it costs you.

Practically, that's exactly why I love the Profit First method and using Relay Bank the way we do. I know exactly what I owe my contractors before the money ever gets spent somewhere else. Keeping your word starts with actually knowing your numbers.

How do you make sure you're keeping your word to the people you owe, even when it's tight? Send me a DM, I'd love to hear how you handle it.

A builder does not wake up one morning and decide to steal four million dollars. I want to walk you through how it actually happens, because I have seen the books behind this pattern more times than I can count, and it starts somewhere completely ordinary.

Job A runs over. Every build does. The bid was thin, the framing took longer, and the money that was meant to cover the subs is already spent.

Then Job B signs, and Job B's deposit pays Job A's subcontractors.

That is the whole thing. Nobody feels like a criminal doing it. The subs get paid. The client never knows. It works.

Except now Job B has no money either. So you sell Job C. Then Job D. Each new deposit covers the hole under the last one, and the hole gets bigger every time, and the only thing holding the whole structure up is your ability to keep selling.

One slow month and it comes down. That is when forty families find out at once.

Three things stop it, and none of them are hard. A job costing tool, so you can see this week which job is underwater. A written draw schedule, given to the client up front, so money moves when a milestone is done rather than when a bill lands. And a separate account for every project, which Texas already expects of you and which almost nobody actually does.

If you run jobs out of one account, I am not calling you a criminal. I am telling you that you have already built the machine, and you are the only thing standing between it and the wall.

An influencer couple I heard about recently was all over social media. Nice cars, nice houses, videos of "their" remodeled homes showing off the work. From the outside, it looked like they were killing it.

Here's the thing. As business owners, we get so tempted to look at social media and think, why aren't I doing that well? But when you peel back the curtain, this couple is now heading to prison. Neither of them can say they didn't know, they did this together. She's serving six and a half years, he's serving six and a half years, and they've been ordered to pay 2.8 million dollars in restitution.

You never know what's actually behind someone's highlight reel. Stop comparing your real business to someone else's curated one.

Have you ever caught yourself comparing your business to what you see online? Send me a DM, I'd love to hear about it.

We spun the wheel four times on Wednesday and every single thing it landed on was wrong.

Not wrong like a technicality. Wrong like business owners repeat these to me every week and they are quietly costing them money.

Here they are.

"Never turn away a paying client." I turned one down at my own dinner table, back when we genuinely needed the money. It did not sink us. If someone feels wrong on the first call, they usually are, and the revenue never covers what they take out of you.

"If you want it done right, do it yourself." Eighty percent done by someone else beats a hundred percent that never gets done at all. That is not settling. That is the only way work ever leaves your desk.

"Write off your clothing haul, it is content." If you would wear it anywhere else, it is not deductible. Branded uniforms count. Your haul does not. And the phrase write off is not actually in the tax code.

"My CPA is handling my financial strategy." Almost certainly not. Bookkeeping, CFO strategy, tax preparation and tax planning are four separate services. Paying for one does not get you the other three, and most owners have never been told that out loud.

That last one is the one I would send to a friend. Ask them which of the four they are actually paying for. If they cannot answer, they are probably paying for one and assuming they get all four.

"My CPA is handling my financial strategy." That's what a lot of you think. It's usually not true.

Paying someone to do your taxes is not the same as having a strategy. There are really four different things your CPA might be doing for you: bookkeeping, tax preparation, tax planning, and CFO-level strategy. Most of you are only getting one of those, tax prep, once a year. And if April is the only time you talk to your CPA, you're not getting the other three.

Know what you're actually paying for. It might not be what you think.

Not sure which one you're getting? Send me a DM and I'll help you figure it out.
