Before you close out 2026, here are five to-dos for anyone nearing retirement.

The income choices you make in the next two months can affect your taxes, and your Medicare premiums, for years. Medicare premiums are generally based on your tax return from two years earlier, so a large distribution or Roth conversion this year can show up in 2028.

Sometimes the best move is the simplest one. For one client, available cash could cover expenses that would otherwise be funded with taxable distributions. Tax planning isn’t always about finding another deduction.

“My current CPA is retiring.”

That was the entire answer on a recent new-client intake form, and we’re hearing it more and more often.

A CPA retirement doesn’t have to mean a rushed search in February. Making the move now gives your new CPA time to review your prior returns, understand what changed this year, and plan before December 31.

Bottom line: the IRS already has most of your 2026 tax forms lined up. Make sure you do too.

We recently helped a client whose investment 1099 went to the IRS but never reached him. The mismatch triggered a notice covering two tax years.

An IRS notice isn’t automatically proof you did something wrong. But it does need a response, and it’s far easier to handle when your CPA sees it early.

Quick myth to retire: “Switching CPAs means starting over from scratch.” Not true.

Here’s how one client described it:

“I expected changing CPAs to be a lot of work, but the process was surprisingly easy. I sent over my prior returns, answered a few questions, and bmp, CPA took it from there. By the time we had our first conversation, Brooke already understood my tax situation and had identified things we should be thinking about going forward. I wish I had made the change sooner.” — Drew

October is a great time to make the move: before engagement letters go out at the beginning of November, and while there’s still time to plan for 2026.

October 15th is approaching around here, the final stretch for extended individual returns.

Extensions can be a useful tool. They protect accuracy when a document shows up late or a K-1 is delayed. But the extended deadline is firm, and it only covers filing. Any tax owed was still due back in April.

If you're on extension, check in with your CPA this week to make sure everything's on track.

We break down how extensions really work here. 👉 https://bit.ly/4bbepmD

Happy International Coffee Day! ☕ It's also October 1st, which means the 4th quarter is officially here.

So pour a cup and think about this: fall is the best time of year to start the conversation with your CPA.

When you start now, your prior returns are reviewed and your history is on file long before February. There's still time to talk through decisions that affect this tax year. And when tax season arrives, you're already set up instead of starting from scratch.

Waiting until January doesn't make the process easier. It just gives you fewer options.

What's in your mug this morning, and when do you usually start thinking about taxes? ☕👇

"I expected changing CPAs to be a lot of work, but the process was surprisingly easy."

That's what Drew told us after joining bmp, CPA, and we hear some version of it often.

Switching CPAs feels like a burden until you're actually doing it. You send your prior returns, answer some key questions, and we do our homework before we ever meet. By the first conversation, we have a baseline understanding of your situation.

If you've been putting off a change because it sounds like a hassle, here's what the process actually looks like. 👉 https://bit.ly/4yskTrf

If your accountant just retired (or is about to) here's your reminder that this is not the headache it sounds like.

We move clients from retiring CPAs all the time, and the transition is genuinely smooth: we securely pull your prior-year returns, get you set up in a few short steps, and take it from there. The line we hear most? “That was way easier than I thought it'd be.”

A retiring CPA is actually a good moment to ask a bigger question: is my next accountant just going to file my return once a year, or actually plan ahead with me?

If you're facing this, let's make the switch simple. 👉 https://bit.ly/4xDOYEc

If a letter shows up telling you to “enroll” your cryptocurrency with the IRS before a deadline: stop.

It's a scam.

The IRS has confirmed there is no “Digital Asset Compliance Portal.” These fake letters look official, include a QR code, and use a countdown to pressure you.

Scanning that code hands scammers your personal and account information.

Real IRS notices don't operate by QR code, and they don't ask you to “verify” your crypto wallets. When something feels off, slow down and check before you scan or share anything.

Have you or someone you know received one of these?
