Midterm elections bring plenty of headlines.

But here’s some perspective: the S&P 500 has been higher 12 months after every midterm election since 1950, with an average gain of about 14.5%.

History doesn’t guarantee what happens next. But it can be a useful reminder not to let political headlines become an investment strategy.

If you buy $10,000 of NVIDIA stock, NVIDIA doesn’t get your $10,000.

Surprising, right?

Most everyday stock trading happens between investors in what’s called the secondary market.

You’re buying shares from someone who already owns them, not directly from the company.

Simple concept. But it’s one of those things about investing that everyone assumes you already know.

Mortgage rates just had their biggest weekly jump in four years.

If you’re shopping for a home, that can mean more than simply having a higher monthly payment.

A higher payment can change the debt-to-income calculation used to qualify you for the loan.

Same income. Same down payment. Same house.

Different rate. Different math.

It’s 10 p.m. Do you know where your shares are? 😎

You see them on your phone. You see them on your statement.

But where are they actually?

A little investing question that isn’t quite as elementary as it sounds.

60 on Wednesday. Still paying attention.

And still not entirely sure how I got here this quickly.

There’s still a lot to see.

The 10-year Treasury is above 5%.

Why does that matter?

Because when investors can earn around 5% on a U.S. Treasury, stocks have more competition. It can also affect mortgage rates, borrowing costs, bond prices and how investors value stocks.

It doesn’t mean abandon stocks or hide in cash.

It does mean the investment landscape has changed, and the bond market is worth paying attention to.

The Fed raised rates 0.25% yesterday.

Stocks initially pulled back. Today, they’re higher.

One possible reason: investors may be taking some comfort in seeing the Fed demonstrate that it’s willing to fight inflation rather than let it linger.

There are other factors at work too, including lower oil prices today. Markets are never quite as simple as one headline = one reaction.

The bigger lesson?

Markets are forward-looking. By the time something becomes obvious in the headlines, investors are usually already thinking about what comes next.

few weeks can change the narrative quickly.

Oil above $100. Inflation back in focus. Treasury yields moving higher. And the Fed meets next week.

The temptation is to predict the next rate move.

I’d rather own a portfolio that doesn’t require getting that prediction right.

What are we actually working for?

We save. We invest. We plan for retirement.

But a bigger account balance isn’t really the end goal.

It’s having more control over your time. More choices about what you do with it and who you spend it with.

That’s a pretty good thing to remember on Labor Day.

Happy Labor Day.

A portfolio answers: **“What do I own?”**

A financial plan should answer: **“Am I going to be okay?”**

Investments matter. But so do taxes, Social Security, estate planning, insurance, cash flow and, eventually, actually enjoying the money you spent decades accumulating.

Don’t confuse the investment statement with the plan.
