My wife, Katie, and I live in Norfolk, Nebraska with our four boys – Hudson, Kiptyn, Tate, and Spencer – who keep us busy and grateful. Outside of work, I enjoy coaching youth sports, spending time outdoors, and relaxing at the river with my family. We serve clients nationwide, both remotely and through office locations where I’m licensed to do business. No matter where you live, if you’re approaching retirement and want a plan designed to protect your wealth, reduce your tax burden, and leave a meaningful legacy, I’d be honored to help.

Think retirement planning has to be complicated? Strip it down and you only need 3 accounts. A cash reserve of 1-2 years of spending outside the market, so a bad year never forces you to sell at a loss. A tax-deferred account (IRA or 401k) as your core retirement income. And a Roth, even a small one, for tax-free income you control. Everything else usually just adds complexity.

Most couples heading into retirement have only half of the accounts they need. The six to look at: a joint taxable brokerage account, each spouse’s own IRA (a non-working spouse can have one too), each spouse’s separate 401k, a Roth for each spouse, a joint cash reserve of 1-2 years of expenses, and an HSA if either of you still qualifies. Treating retirement accounts as one household pot usually means missing a tax advantage you can’t get anywhere else.

Your first 12 months of retirement set the pattern for the next 20. Confirm every end date in writing, set up your own tax withholding, and check Rule of 55 before moving the old 401k. Update beneficiaries, build a 1-2 year cash reserve, and automate your withdrawals into a paycheck. Model your first Roth conversion while income is low, check year-end deadlines early, and compare what you spent to what you planned.

The habit that may shape your retirement more than your investments: how often you check your balance. Look daily and you’ll see red almost half the time, and a loss hurts about twice as much as a gain feels good. Look quarterly or yearly and you’re seeing the real trend, which tends to mean calmer decisions, especially once you’re withdrawing income.

Here's what savvy investors took away from Q3

A calm market at all-time highs may be the most dangerous one for a retiree. There’s no warning sign, so you keep withdrawing the same amount, and in a slow, quiet decline that means selling more shares each month and locking in losses. That’s sequence of returns risk: it’s not your average return that matters, it’s whether the bad years hit right when you start withdrawing.

The mistakes that hurt your 401k change with your balance. Under $50K, not capturing the full employer match. At $50K to $250K, setting your allocation once and never rebalancing. At $250K to $500K, not knowing your fees. At $500K to $1M, staying too conservative or too aggressive without checking. At $1M and up, ignoring what happens at withdrawal and skipping Roth conversion planning before RMDs start. Different balance, different mistake.

The mistakes that hurt your IRA change depending on your balance. Under $50K, not knowing if your contribution is even deductible. At $50K to $250K, missing a low-income year to convert. At $250K to $1M, ignoring RMD planning and skipping QCDs. At $1M and up, not checking beneficiaries against the inherited IRA rules and underestimating how big RMDs get once they stack with Social Security. Most of these are avoidable if caught early.

The financial moves that matter change completely as your net worth grows. From $500K to $1M, the basics do the work: your 401k match, an emergency fund, and real insurance. From $1M to $2M, diversifying across taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts starts to matter. From $2M to $5M, estate planning stops being optional. From $5M to $10M, tax strategy becomes a full-time consideration. At $10M and up, it’s about protecting and transferring wealth. The moves that got you to your first half million won’t get you to the next range.

401(k) taxes you on the way out, Roth taxes you on the way in, but there's one account that can skip both: your HSA. Contribute through payroll to potentially save another 7.65% in F**A taxes, invest the balance instead of leaving it in cash, and pay medical bills from other cash flow when you can. Save every qualified receipt, because you can potentially reimburse yourself tax-free years later while the money stays invested. If paying out of pocket would strain you, use the HSA. That's what it's there for.
