Geopolitical developments add another layer of complexity, as recent disruptions have shown how quickly supply expectations and energy prices can change.

WMS Market Commentary: Narrow Market Breadth

Market breadth narrowed last week as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.28%, its highest level of the year. Large technology and semiconductor stocks kept the Nasdaq positive, while most of the market moved lower.

In this video, Richard Riva, CPWAยฎ of Wealth Management Solutions, breaks down the week's highlights that drove the markets for business owners / high-net-worth families, and executives.

What you'll learn:
โ€ข Winners and losers last week
โ€ข Events that moved the markets
โ€ข What managers and analysts are looking at next week

U.S. stocks were mixed last week, with the Dow falling 1.3%, the S&P 500 down 0.3%, the Russell 2000 down 0.2%, while the Nasdaq gained 0.5%.
The biggest story was rising Treasury yields. The 10-year yield climbed to 5.28%, its highest level of the year, keeping pressure on the broader market. At the same time, technology and semiconductor stocks continued to lead, with the semiconductor index gaining 3.7%.
Investors also received softer economic data. September payrolls increased by just 29,000, well below expectations, while unemployment rose to 4.2%. Cooler inflation data and comments from Fed officials reduced expectations for another rate hike in October.
But market breadth remained a concern. Eight of eleven S&P 500 sectors declined, and the equal-weight S&P 500 fell 0.7%, showing that gains remained concentrated in large technology companies.
Looking ahead, investors will focus on the September FOMC minutes, ISM services, jobless claims, consumer sentiment, and Treasury auctions.

WMS Market Commentary: Rising Yields: Markets

Major Markets closed mostly higher last week. The greatest gains were in the Large Cap and Mega Cap sides of the style box as technology continued to drive overall market performance last week.

The Nasdaq rose 2.1%, while the S&P 500 gained 1.2%, and the Dow added 0.3%. In contrast, the Russell 2000 fell 0.8%, highlighting how uneven market participation remains.
Semiconductors were a major catalyst, with the PHLX Semiconductor Index jumping 6.3% on renewed enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence and infrastructure spending.
However, rising interest rates remained a concern. Stronger economic data and hawkish Fed comments pushed the 10-year Treasury yield up 16 basis points to 5.17%, putting pressure on smaller and more rate-sensitive companies.
Oil prices were another important factor. WTI crude ultimately fell nearly 4% for the week, providing some relief from inflation concerns.
So, while the headline indexes moved higher, the underlying market remained mixed. Technology and AI continue to lead, while elevated interest rates, inflation concerns, and expectations for additional Fed tightening remain important risks heading into the final quarter of the year.
